Piemonte: Truffles instead of Turkey; 11/23/2023-12/2/2023 (Barolo, Barbaresco, Alto Piemonte and of course Alba): I expected to prefer the Lessona based on the descriptions and so I surprised myself when I thought this was the star of the show. Very dark fruits, almost blackberry but with this ripeness and crispness that is almost refreshing in style. It’s classy and bright and yet with this underlying intensity that is kept in check mostly because of that high acid character. More of the red volcanic soil (and I seem to be a sucker if there’s some iron ore laying around) and so I guess it makes sense. 80% Nebbiolo and then 10-15% Vispolina and then the other grapes. Same 18 months aging in wood. Very enjoyable and I wine I will actively seek out going forward.
