Deep garnet color, vivid at the edges. Classic, beautiful purity in the fruit on the nose - fresh blackberry, plum and raspberry with violet, tapenade, bay leaf, mesquite char, cracked pepper and allspice berry. Succulent black and red berry fruit on the palate with seamless depth of fresh thyme, pink peppercorn, fresh red florals, hints of clove oil and beef blood. Medium-bodied, refined and elegant through the palate with ebullient acidity and fine rounded tannins, finishing with juicy mouthwatering depth. Just lovely, and a very nice classic departure from some examples of the last couple warmer vintages of Northern Rhones.

Monier-Perreol makes very nice St. Josephs in a traditional style, and this was no exception. My only gripe is that the prices on these are creeping up, a la Gonon, and so this can no longer be considered a value (though I'd be hard-pressed to identify any values in Northern Rhone anymore). I paid ~$30 for the '11 Chatelet, and it now sells for more than double that. Wah wah. Anyway, this has a nice smoky, meaty profile without being too rustic or gamey (not that that's a bad thing), and shows lots of brambly blackberry fruit. A good introductory wine for those who want to see what Northern Rhone syrah is all about. Drinking well now and probably better for the short term. Fair value at $49 full retail.

Wonderfully smoky, dark fruited and peppery aromas that gave way to a lively, blackberry, black olive and a salty, meaty profile that lingered.
