Here we go atruffling... (aka Piedmont... and Veneto); 11/16/2018-11/30/2018 (Alba, Guarene, Modena, Barolo, La Morra, Lake Garda .....): Quite possibly going to be our wine of the trip. It certainly is thus far. Had wanted to order a 2001 but the restaurant was out of it. They had this bottle which wasn't on the menu. As we'd just been tasting at the winery it felt worth the splurge to see what some serious age means for these wines. I can say they benefit quite a bit from it. This wine was just lovely. It's got a darkness and a brooding character to it. It pours as dark as today's releases. Decanted. Some sediment. This is another level of complex. Some of the more secondary notes coming through. The spice notes are interesting. With time in the glass there's a great blackberry flavor. Almost like an unsweetened cobbler version of that. Just spectacular. One of those great bottles.

Lovely rich red colour. Well integrated earth and ripe red berries. Not overly developed, very smooth. Silky texture, bright red berries, damson and blackberries, lovely blend of flavours. Tannins have softened but are still there in a soft and silky way. This is a brilliant wine, youthful fruit with earthy rather than oxidative spice, fleshy and refined, drinking beautifully.

Decanted for one hour, then tracked in glass for another two hours. Less stellar than my last bottle, this was from another source and the cork was totally soaked to right below the lip of the cork. Seemed a bit tired and thin on one hand, and tight and young on the other. Hmmm - early life storage issues? Still, this had soaring aromatics, and a tight red and black fruited flavor profile that I hoped would open up and sing, but never did. No classic Barolo notes other than some small road tar and hints of roses, as the rest seemed asleep, buried or just long gone. Very, very good, but just a little disappointing as I was introducing my son to Barolo for the first time.

A little rustic like old fruit. Was okay. Filled out as night along.
