  • It's hard to know what to make of a wine that's nearing 17 years old and well past its prime. But what's clear, even now, is that this is high-quality Burgundy, and it reveals much of what must have made it, not so long ago, a superb wine. There is still raspberry red, but the colour is now burnt orange and mahogany flecked with that red, mixed with deeper purple. And while age and oxidation have brought out notes of leather, cigar box, and dried fruit like prune and raisin, there is still quite a bit of fresh fruit (cherry, raspberry, strawberry), a remarkable expression of vitality after all these years, and one can only imagine how lovely the fruit once was, as well as spicy black pepper, creamy vanilla, and a touch of earthiness. Of course, there isn't much structure. This is very soft on the palate, at first almost like an Oloroso sherry, and there just isn't much acidity at all, though, again, there are lingering hints of the delicate balance that must once have been here -- and, with time, some acidity does show up and add zest. What there may not have been is exceptional complexity or depth, but regardless this is an impressive and enjoyable aged wine that in its advanced age showcases the virtues of its evolution and devolution, teetering on the verge of full collapse and drinking now in the 87-91 range (it shifts around quite a bit after opening, showing that vitality, then not), and it certainly deserves the benefit of any doubt.

  • Fairly full bodied, strikingly mineral with reglisse notes. Agreeable freshness. The colour shows some age, but the wine as a whole is still young. Very welll balanced, drinking fine today.
