Dinner with E and J at Clooney (Clooney Restaurant, Auckland, New Zealand): Massive, rich and multi-dimensional. Grapefruit and honey, very mineral, considerable bottle age. This is still really fresh and in only very early maturity. There is a spice kick at the finish which adds lift. The 15% is completely hidden by the fruit and the wine comes across as beautifully balanced. Nice hit of oak on the nose and mid palate consigned this wine to more of a sipping between course wine (although it was a knock-out with comte cheese).

This is a wine that I just don't get... Fat, low acid, high alcohol. If there's anything I really dislike it's the the massive taste of metallic alcohol in white wine. 15%, what are they thinking... There seemed to be some lovely minerals and exotic fruit, but just barely discernable. More air and even more air (two days)... no improvement.

Grand Designs Reveal Week - Dinner #3 (Wedge House, Queensberry, Central Otago, New Zealand): Golden straw, caramel and honey aromas, in the mouth, huge presence, rich mouthfeel and opulent texture. Not a trace of the 15% is felt at the end. The fruit is still very much vibrant and alive. Gorgeous finish. Outstanding aged GV!
