  • 2019 Barolo Check in (My place, Portland OR): The nose is tight and a bit unwilling, but what is there is still lovely with it favoring the higher tone of rose, petals, red cherries, red fruits, fresh berries, savory herbs, and some spice. The medium, full body is polished and refined with useful and gripping tenants. this is a little dumb on the nose , but the class of the wine is evident on the field. I would love to see where this goes in 10 years.

  • Young BaBa 2014-2019 theme dinner at Duomo. Tasted blind. Drank in Conterno Sensory.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, bright ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of classic red cherries, red pomegranate, earth, strong vein of blue marl soil minerality. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of fresh savoury earth, intense classic sour red cherries, sweet red licorice, dancing sweet spices, fresh leather. Very long grippy finish.
Excellent quality. Wow this is good. Towering presence of grand cru substance, yet there is an gossamer lightness feel to it on the mid-palate. Try this again in 4-5 years' time?

  • PnP into a Conterno Sensory. Ok wow. The nose makes you swoon - perfumed and translucent and energetic with bright berry fruit (raspberry and some strawberry), rose petals, exotic spices, and a bit of orange peel. Very young and acid driven with tons of structure. Explosive and pure in the mouth with raspberry and black cherry, citrus and orange peel, spices and florals. Some mint. This is so potent on the palate - mouth coating it’s almost painful, but it stays light and pure. Huge acid and packed with extract - there is a pulse of red fruits and sweetness in the middle and then this becomes savory with lots of tar and herbs and then bitter towards the end and into the finish because it’s stuffed so full. You see leather and the citrus and the fine but assertive tannins emerge. Licorice and maybe a touch of heat. This has tons of potential but other than the finish it’s enjoyable now due to its purity. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 4.5-5+/6, Finish - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20 (with 17.5-18/20 potential).

Day 2: just like I expected -this is much less open today - still showing bright but it has shut down significantly and the most alluring aromas have retreated. So if you’re going to drink one now make sure to PnP and enjoy in the first few hours.

Day 5: the last remaining glass in the bottle was wonderful - it has unclenched and showing it’s perfume - sweet red fruit and wonderful roses just like when popped. Now it’s more gentle and less explosive but the sappiness on the palate has returned as well. Just lovely.

  • La Festa del Barolo Masterclass (The Pool, NYC): The '19 Rocche is a very good wine in the making, a classic La Morra Barolo with excellent balance. The wine seems a bit tighter than my note from last spring, but showed similarly.

On the nose, I found ripe dark red fruit, fresh red floral tones, licorice, and orange peel. On the palate, it is medium in body and quite tannic and clenched, but the tannins are fine, and with age this will be a beautifully finessed wine.

  • Festa dal Barolo 2019 Masterclass (The Pool, Manhattan): Festa dal Barolo Masterclass

A floral and red fruited nose. Lovely perfume and spice on the nose. Seemingly only midweighted but carrying more depth beautifully. More red fruits, licorice, spice on the palate with outstanding balance. Nice sense fo clarity and focus. This has come together nicely since last year.
