  • At first quite musty on the nose, wet leaves, mushrooms, earth, spices. Only very little fruit. With some air a bit more depth and fresher with more sweet fruit notes. On the palate sharp acidity, hardly any fruit, drying. Still nice. Past its best - drink up. 86-88

  • Somewhat dilute - 1980 isn't the biggest year. But given its lack of concentration, a complete wine that is very much alive from magnum. Not something I would search out, but a classic Clape Cornas. Perfect dinner wine where the objective is for the wine to go with the food rather than outshine it. Not particularly long but the balance works and it tastes like 28 year old Syrah should.

  • Very rustic nose a little muddy in character. Very tannic with a little sweet fruit in the middle but ultimately a touch too green and challenging. Tannins dominate and will probably live for a while longer but will always be a tough nut.
