Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Audouzed it, open at 2 for a 7 pm dinner. Color was very pale, aroma not overwhelming, but the taste! These are very weird times, and this was the first wine I'd had in a couple weeks of shutdown, and it took my taste buds a moment to register all the things going on, mostly a blood orange loveliness with some nuances. Good length, no barnyard. First sips were the best -- it simplified by the end of the night. This is by far the oldest Burg I've had, and one of very few grand crus, so this is just my hunch, but I think this was "correct," as the kids say, for a 49-year-old GC, but not outstanding. More of an experience than a massive pleasure, except for the first couple sips, when I stood on my front deck and looked at the sunset and tried to slow down all the anxieties in the world and just focus on what was in my glass. For a few minutes I could do that, which is maybe the best we can hope for from a wine right now.

And if that's too poetic, listen to my girlfriend, who knows as much about Burgundy as I do. She took one sip and said, "Oh, old wine," and put it back down. : )
