Eh. I must be drinking a different wine from the rest of these notes. Maybe low level TCA on this bottle though I don't sense it. Oak, vanilla, barrel spice and some tannin wrapped around simple and unremarkable fruit. No depth, no nuance, no development. I know I can't expect Lopez de Heredia at this price, but this carries little interest and bears only passing resemblance to Rioja. At a similar price point, I'll take a Diez-Caballero any day.

It's been a while since I've had a Rioja. This was darker than I recall them usually being--almost purple. Pretty nose that offers floral, vanilla oak and red fruit. Full bodied and extremely concentrated on the palate with soft tannins and a chewy finish. I also picked up the port note identified by the previous taster. While this seems bigger than I expected it for a Rioja, it was very enjoyable and in my mind a good value for $20.

Was time to drink in 2011 - gained in complexity, but not a memorable wine...
