Another relic from the Sams era, but this time not a victim of keeping too long. I note in passing the last TN dates to 2008.
Unmistakably Old-World, dark ruby, corky notes blow off to reveal an oaky, leathery aroma redolent of age. On the palate quite full body, still ripe, sharp berry fruit, moderate acidity, medium tannins still evident, length and grip, plenty to chew on.

Nose of crushed blackcurrant, plum, brown sugar, and a little merde. Sweet and rich on the palate, turning brawny with chalky tannins, a little bitterness, and some noticeable heat. Structure bodes well for a long life - needs 3-5 years before revisiting.

$21.60 retail, after discount. This is bigger than both the A.O.C. Bandol and Cuvee Estagnol from Bastide Blanche in '01 (see TNs). Quite tannic. Better balance than the extremely smokey '01 Estagnol... more fruit and structure. An hour+ of air helped this wine open up, though it's still tightly wound at this early moment in its life. On the nose, raspberry / dark cherry fruit - though certainly not fruit driven; charcoal, cola, an herbal note, with some licorice. Seems to have the right compenents to suggest it will age quite well. I'll be interested to see what 10-15+ years in the cellar allows this wine to become... Note: Three days later the last glass from the bottle, decanted into a small 6 oz bottle with no room for air, was even better than on the first night, having opened even more and softened slightly - yet no signs of any oxidation...

Nice berry aroma but not much on the palate.
