  • Strawberry, roses, and ripe but not overripe fruit. Midweighted and supple on the palate with nice sap and a sense of power with grace and a giving nature. Lovely balance. More deep strawberry fruit, licorice, a sense of stoniness, and lovely perfume. Finishes with cooling menthol notes. A much better showing than the last bottle I had. 93

  • Drank the bottle way too quickly—don’t be me and give this plenty of air. Depth of berry and herb on the palate. Amazing mouthfeel, rich but still light, with fine tannin and lasting acidity. Yummy. Drinking well but still some time.

  • This one was better than the last one. Opened about 3 hours prior to our meal (short ribs in Sangiovese - a younger rosso), this one showed great and was even more meaty than the normal nebbiolo - barolo angle I take. A really delicious wine with strong cherry and leather notes with obvious umami and acidic balance despite the hot vintage.

  • Nose is deeply fruity and earthy. Chewy texture on the palate, with elements of tobacco and spice and definite bit of acid with some delicious integrated tannins at the end.

  • Objectively a well-made wine. The first nose of the wine and the deep crimson color shows that is from a quite warm vintage and made me think it would taste atypical. I was surprised that after the first 30 min or so that lessened and while not as restrained and nuanced as in more common vintage conditions, it did show the ripe cherry and cranberry flavors. As it opened up and keeping some for a 2nd night, the ripeness lessened and leather and a mocha/espresso aspect showed more. I doubt it will fall apart anytime soon, but it feels like a drink now proposition to me.

(Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany) In the midst of chaos, “Il Maestro” Diego Molinari managed to make the wine of the vintage. Since the 1980s, Molinari has been turning out some of the appellation’s greatest wines from his small estate on the eastern side of Montalcino. These Brunellos are classic and traditional in every way, but show massive character and unbelievable complexity. As dense and layered as they are, they are surprisingly light on their feet—purity, grace, precision, and elegance all come to mind. Although they’re not inexpensive, Cerbaiona’s wines retain their place at the top of the production chain in this recently troubled appellation and are well worth the investment. Hot Picks
