  • Drinking nicely. In a good spot right now

  • My final bottle from a mixed 1997/1999 case purchased during a winery visit. The cork broke, and I had to strain the wine through a mesh filter to remove the cork bits, into a decanter. It smelled great, but the opening taste was thin and watery. I was prepared to open something else, but decided to wait a few minutes. After about 10 minutes, it really bloomed. Obviously it is an older Napa Cab at this point, but it never tasted hot or alcoholic, even at 14.5% alcohol. There was still more than enough fruit left to really enjoy this. A friend of mine and I finished it in under an hour.

  • Lost a little of its edge, but still drinking well.

  • Very dark in color and exhibiting similarly dark fruits on the nose such as plum and blackberry but with some hints of licorace. Full on the palate with excellent tannins that are soft but give it rock solid structure. Elegant finish. This wine is still a baby and can cellar another 10 years. However, it is wonderful now so drink up if you want.

  • I believe this is the best vintage of the last 15 in Napa (not the 97). The long, cool growing season allowed for depth and structure while also allowing ample fruit flavors, and this is a prime example. Youthful for a 9 year old Napa cab, it showed ripe berry fruit, toasty oak, tame tannin structure, and a vibrant finish of currant, oak, and mountain fruit. Gorgeous.
