2002 Beaune and Volnay Premier Crus (San Francisco): This bottle had a depressed cork with with obvious seepage, so this was opened shortly before pouring without the 4 hours of air that the other wines in the flight received. Pale red. Delightful, sinuous nose with lots of cherry. This is quite a disconnect from the palate, which is medium bodied and saline with a strong soil imprint, vanillin oakiness, and not a lot of fruit. Given the concern about the cork, it was not obviously oxidized. Pretty mixed up wine that confused but did not satisfy. The first Coche Volnay I've ever had so difficult to put this in context.

Nicely mature, this seems to be drinking at peak, although I couldn't help but wonder whether this may have been better a few years ago. I've had these wines before young and they are ripe and juicy, with this bottle the fruit was a bit more delicate and elegant, and not particularly deep. Good wine, but don't expect the magic you find in Coche's white wines here.

Bright, juicy ripe fruit and pretty floral notes, with some aged development just emerging. Texture is terrific. For my palate, would hold these a while longer. While some folks I know think this cuvee often has too much of a candied sweetness to it, I tend to think this develops into something quite nice with sufficient age (or in leaner vintages).

Top Volnay Producers and Vineyards 1971-2006 (Custom House Tavern - Chicago IL): Single blind with Volnay 2002 1er. Lots of spice and red fruit on nose with floral hints. Red cherry and strawberry on palate, completely primary, with flavors that seemed to expand and expand towards the middle and finish. I added this as a mystery wine for the flight and it really showed great. A tough wine to find.
