Lunch & Tasting with Gregory Gouges (The Modern): What a great experience to taste the ‘85 Clos des Porrets direct from the estate’s cellar, showing that these older styles of Burgundy can truly mature into something great. The nose showed depths of crushed strawberries, dried florals, earthy minerals, rises, hints of clove, and dusty earth, in an expression you could almost call “sexy”. On the palate, I found soft textures in a pretty expression, with wonderful energy, as notes of wood smoke, zesty tart red fruits, minerals, savory herbs and sweet-and-sour spice washed across the senses. The finish was long and smoky with lingering minerality, dried strawberries and lasting inner floral tones.

During a Paulee dinner so only brief impressions. Wow, this was great. Awesome complexity of forest notes, animalic, good acidity and red fruit on the lingering finish. Great QPR here. 95+

Good, on opening smelled not great but it went away after a few minutes. Cork was very moldy and was extracted quite easily which was worrisome, but after the off-aromas blew off the bottle turned out well. Fruit still alive, non-existent tannins, good herbal character but without much acidity. A little over the hill.

Domain Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges Lunch with Grégory Gouges (The Modern, New York): Light tawny and unhealthy brown. Mostly VA on the nose. Some remaining sweetness of fruit, but maderized and sour. Dreadful. I don't know if this was representative of all 4 bottles poured, but this was a low point to finish the meal and tasting.
