  • F**k me!
    Absolutely spellbinding!

This Barbaresco delivers a masterclass in aging gracefully. The cork was only 75% compromised, the wine was a revelation, bursting with life and exuberance.

On the palate, it offers a wow-wow of pure red fruit mingling with strong scents of an autumnal forest stroll—think damp earth and fallen leaves—and the delicate fragrance of faint roses, which, admittedly, might have stayed hidden without the suggestion from the label.

The structure remains robust, with beautiful acidity, restrained and receeding tannins concocting an elegant balance. Each sip is a delightful contradiction to maturity through it's freshness.

It didn’t pair well with a garlic tomato bacon pasta sauce, but it proved a sublime companion for an evening of relaxation and 2.5 hrs of Netflix.

This wine is one of the most memorable Barbarescos I’ve enjoyed this life—truly a sublime bottle.

If you're stashed: no hurry whatsoever!

  • Has an intoxicating perfume of rose petals, dried flowers, truffle and earth. It still has a core of vinous sweetness, coupled with all sorts of savoury nuance. There's some licorice, leather and teak. It is silky, full and long, still cut by bright acidity. Lovely wine.

  • 13,5% alcohol.

The color here is very odd, really youthful, translucent, blue-hued purple. This doesn't look like Nebbiolo at all, let alone one almost 40 years old. This looks like wine no older than 2 years. The nose is really, REALLY odd by any standards; it is sweet, pungent and saline with noticeable blackcurrant juice concentrate aroma along with aldehydic notes of green apples, sorrel and a hint of sweet, acetonic VA. The wine feels ripe, sweet and very acid-driven on the palate with very youthful fruit flavors of tart dark berries and other forest fruits, some saline aldehydic tang, a little bit of blackcurrant juice and a hint of plastic. The wine comes across as moderately structured with its intense acidity and grippy medium tannins. The finish is long, weird and tangy with odd flavors of plastic, salt-cured beed, some sour cherries, a little bit of green apples, a hint of blackcurrant and a touch of vaguely chemical VA.

There was something definitely wrong here, but no-one had any idea what or why. Everyone agreed that this wine had nothing to do with Nbbiolo and the wine reminded us more of blackcurrant wine that has elevated levels of acetaldehyde (think of Fino Sherry) but no oxidized dried-fruit flavors. However, what made it all weird was that the cork was completely intact, somewhat shrivelled and having some mold growing on top of the wine, suggesting that no-one had replaced the cork at any point. Also, the cork had "1979" printed on its side and it looked pretty much identical to the ones that were used in the other vintages. Even the capsule covering the cork seemed to be very original in quality. So this wine remains as sort of an enigma: it didn't taste anything like Nebbiolo, not really even anything made from grapes. I guess it could be (i.e. most likely) a counterfeit wine, but I wonder how on earth they've managed to re-seal the wine with the original, untouched, mouldy cork?

  • Blind tasting with some friends. #2 Just like when we were poured the Percarlo, we immediately knew what we had in the glass with this wine. Dark garnet-red in color, with serious bricking near the edges. The bouquet consists of notes reminding me of sous bois, already fading overripe dark cherries, dried tobacco leaves and an old leather armchair sitting amidst it all. A touch of rose water, balsamic notes and hints of acetone remain in the back, but are noticeable. Leathery notes, sweetish red fruit and cherries on the palate. Medium-bodied and well-integrated alcohol. Medium to long-lasting finish. Fully matured and very elegant. Seems to be carried by the still lively acid, while the tannins are mostly resolved. The vintage was tricky, but this is a very fine Nebbiolo, indeed. This was our 2nd placed WOTN.

Blindverkostung.

  • this was a great wine drinking so young for its 36 year age, med / dark red (darker than many barbarescos i've had), med plus bodied with good acid, and with a smallish dose of tannin remaining for just the right amount of grip, it had plenty of fruit - a bit more on the dark side of the spectrum, the fruit was dry with no sign of sweetness, crunchy / bitter currants, just a slight hint of angularity kept it from being 94
