There are moments when you open a bottle and immediately know: I'm way too early with this. Unfortunately this happened last weekend with this bottle of Asili. I was kind of thrown off by the reviews here. Unbelievable that someone would go low-80's with this; a complete misrepresentation and misuse of the point system.
So. in the afternoon I decanted the wine for 3 hours before pouring it back into the bottle. I already pre-tasted a bold ruggedness that I did not expect but which showed a lot of promise. In the evening, with a truffle-based pasta, the wine was still very bold and fruit-driven, as well as earthy and herbaceous. Cherry, kirsch, currant. Very jumpy with super tight tannins and acidity. Unbelievable structure and depth. If I had another bottle I'd wait at least another 10 years but probably a lot more.
Right now this wine is mostly showing promise, rather than enjoyability. Patience will definitely be rewarded.

Sandalwood scented and spiced nose. A bit of fartyness with sweaty beefy undertones. Lots of perfumed violets but also alc lifted. Chocolate and milo finishing. A big wine and somehow i thought also a bit fluffy and over extracted. As limited in production as it is (5000 btls) and supposedly situated at the top of the hill, the quality doesnt justify the price. Maybe still young and imbalanced.

Ceretto wine dinner with Federico ceretto (Osvaldo Ristorante Italiano, Maxwell Chambers): Lot of potential here, but really far, far too young to drink. Nose had lots of lovely underlying stuff, with plum sauce, flowery violet tones, lovely dark red fruit, brambles, menthol, all very seductive. Problem was that it was all rather dominated by a cloak of vanilla-laced oak tones that was thrown over everything. 100% new Alliers barriques I am told - that explains it all. Rather oaky on the palate as well, with more vanilla essence and wood notes laced through otherwise nice flavours of sweet plums and cherries, with some lovely flower tones peeking out. Still rather overt and monoltihic in its fruit expression and very tight, with firm, powdery tannins being the other dominating feature of the wine. Finish lacked a bit of length, with tannins, prunes, orange peel and Chinese herbs lingering lightly on the back palate. Still though, plenty of stuffing and nice balance here. Would be nice to try this in 10 years' time when the tannins soften out and the oak (hopefully) tones down. 92-93 for now.
