Perplexing. This still has years left in it. We had it with a Josh Cab Sauv 2018. As a wino, thought for sure the Burrowing Owl would blow the Josh out of the water. It didn’t. The Burrowing Owl has beautiful colour and a delightful nose, it still seems youthful with cherry notes, whereas the Josh was more Vanilla forward. With some Baby back ribs the Burrowing Owl shined through. But without food, if I’m honest with myself, the Josh was pretty darn drinkable and made me ponder why I cellar wine...

Root Day - Poured garnet into the glass (real cork!) and off a medium (1 tsp) amount of sediment. Appealing nose of loam, black fruits, dusky herbs, dark chocolate and a tiny bit of smoke. This is much better than I expected. On the palate there’s very ripe and almost over ripe dark fruit (plums, black currants, black cherries) with vanilla, smoke, dried oregano and dark chocolate. There’s also some very nice grip and bite to this. Medium tannins that are ripe and round. Medium acidity showing some life after 15 years and there’s also a very nice touch of spice and tobacco on the finish. This is a well made and (at this point) in it’s evolution, delicious wine. If this is what BO is about - kudos to them. Delicious now and this particular wine will go another 3 years or so of evolution and may get even better. I know this sounds grudgingly appreciative, but I’ve had so many poor wines from this producer in the early 2000’s that I stopped buying them. It appears in this vintage and with this wine that they found their feet again. Maybe time to try them again????

Bloody marvellous! Full bodied, rich, delicious but glad we are drinking it now. Any longer and it may loose that lip smacking goodness it currently has. Constantly in awe of Burrowing Owls wines.

Ringer for a Napa Valley meritage. Youthful, dark colour. Sweet casis, mocha, espresso. Well integrated sweet tannins. Good acidic lift. Nary a vegetal note.
