  • I opened this on a Friday and kept having a glass until it was gone on Monday. Bottom line: I couldn't ask for more in an 18 year old wine. Cork stained medium magenta with great integrity. No infiltration but slight and I mean very slight side staining. Fragrant nose which told me the wine had survived with little drop off. Initially was brighter and more vibrant due to the acidity. Considering the age the fruit was very good. Tasted more like a high end Chianti but with an undertone of some flavor which I couldn't place, perhaps the core of Barolo grape. On day two and three the fruit was more prominent and I was happy. Last day it had softened but remained very nice. Age has balanced this out. Nice bitterness on the back of tongue which was more pronounced on day 4; think this could be tannins, spice, and mineral, again chalk. I initially felt it was ready to drink upon opening, the age having made it so, but because it got better over the next few days, I feel this could endure a few more years. Last tasting in 2013 I said it tasted more like an aged pinot but now more like a well aged and balanced chianti, with that undertone of unique flavor. Makes me want to purchase more Barolo to see how they develop. CT cellars have 65% left so most are opting to hold and drink at advanced age. I think now is a great time to pull some more corks on this one. A very pleasant surprise and recommended.

  • This took a good 3 hours to open, but when it did open up, it opened up beautifully! Dark blackish-ruby in color. No bricking at all. Big, voluminous nose. Textbook Nebbiolo of orange zest, asphalt, and roses. Loved the spice component in this wine. Somewhat hot and slightly out of out of balance, probably because of the tannins. It is still quite tannic, indicating to me this should rest another 5-10 years. That’s surprising since this is a 17 year old wine. Glad I have 2 more!

  • Tight in the bottle--it took 30-40 minutes to open. Firm tannins with tar and licorice. Fruit slightly overpowered by the tannins. Somewhat disappointed given the vintage.

  • Drinkable now, but still plenty of fine dry tannin. Needs food. Good fruit...likely the fruit will last to see the absorption of the structural elements, but I feel like this is not guaranteed. If you prefer/like young Barolo, you might slate this one for consumption within 5 years. If you like Barolo aged and/or don't mind a bit of a gamble, hold for at least 10 years to let the some of the tannins drop out and see what remains.
