We sipped on a birthday month French Wine & Cheese evening for our better half and friend's Mother...both May babies. We bought at Sotheby's ex-Chateau auction in a nine bottle vertical. Only way we ever would buy such a wine...perfect provenance! We opened, let breathe for 2+ hours in the bottle and were met with a WOW, KAPOW!!! We were pleased to open this year as we are not confident too many years left in her, but the fruit was still happy, tannins still evident and the overall event for each sipper was heavenly. 55 year old wines often disappoint, but when they meet our hopes, they are better than our best dreams. Santé

The 1961 La Tour HB is supposed to be the same wine as the 1961 HB, as at the time both plots were apparently already vinified together. Bottle provenance and condition were both very good (lower neck, deep color at the color with a 3mm clear rim on the edge). Nose was appropriately fruity but maturity was clear. Tannins had clearly melted, but wine was well balanced in the mouth. There was just very little excitement though. The wine had clearly passed it's prime. For one who really likes old wines, this did not do it for me. Neither did any of the other: 61 HB, 61 Palmer (folks' favorite), 61 Calon Segur (my favorite), 61 Las acses, 59 La Mission HB, 59 Gruaud Larose (the worst, poor bottle). Lesson: no need to pay hefty premiums for 50y+ second growths.

Nuts and truffles, tons of age on this.

Moderate oxidation, but great dark sweet spice underneath.
