  • Am 26.12. mit der Familie getrunken. Viel zu schnell leer. Braucht Zeit, um sich im Glas zu entfalten. Hat noch Jahre vor sich.

  • Prior bottle was close to two years ago and this wine continues to show well. Peach, apple, floral and mineral on the nose. Medium bodied and as this was served a bit on the cold side, the notes and score reflect those somewhat changed qualities. It recovered quite nicely as it warmed, but never reached quite the heights that it did previously. To start, showed green apple and pear upfront, moving to golden peach through the middle It it warmed, showed more and more peach upfront and the mid-body moved to a more tropical set (pineapple and mango). Continues to show very good density throughout. Honey, mineral and tart citrus continue to make up the finish. Overall balance was still quite a positive, aided by very good acidity. It didn't have quite the intensity that it did previously, but pretty close, especially as it warmed. In general, the fruit notes (once fully opened up) were close to my prior bottle, but a small step down in complexity and depth and the acidity had also taken a small step down in term of zip, liveliness and balance contributed. The wine continues to show quite well and will have many years ahead of it, but I'd take care on the serving temperature.

  • Gorgeous showing from magnum for our "distant socializing" tasting. The primary fruit was still in full force, displaying citrus, cherry and tropical tones. There was also a bit of a honeyed edge, but only present as an accent, not a dominate note. Some petrol crept in after the bottle had been open for a while, but again, just as an accent, not a dominant theme. Full bodied, but still incredibly lively because of the cooler vintage, it worked on its own, and with the cheeses, as well as the grilled pork tenderloins. There's plenty of upside (15+ years to maturity, especially out of magnum), but it's a wonderful drink right now.

  • Bronzefarbend. Dicht und massiv. Geht eher in Richtung Auslese. Früchtekorb und gute Säure.

  • Holy cow is this special. The light golden color hides the rich, apricot and vanilla nose that just explodes from the glass. The fireworks continue on the deeply layered, fresh and crunchy palate that seems to pop in my mouth. Literally does not quit. Sweet but so balanced you don’t even notice the sugar. A perfect wine to drink solo with a big smile. Should last for ages. (97)

(Shafer-Frohlich Bock Fels SPATLESE GK) Weekend Dear Friends, A few recent arrivals of note - both are EXTREMELY LIMITED cellar candidates and worth your investigation. Have a good weekend everyone - - Jon Rimmerman ************************ 2006 Casa de Mouraz Flor de Mouraz Reserva (Dao) This wine is one of the most allocated and difficult to obtain dry reds in Portugal but it remains completely unknown in the US (not for long). After a 2005 version that was initially promising (but has failed to impress this taster of late), the 2006 is a completely different animal - a blend of naturally grown and vinified indigenous grapes that gave a powerful performance in the vintage. The 2006 Flor de Mouraz combines the southern, silty extractive that Portugal has in spades with an uncanny natural acidity and massive presence that nods to Pomerol (in a vintage like 1982) as well as the Dao. It's an electric, masculine and perfumed example with a certain sense of pride but it is not for today - if you have the patience to cellar it for 4-8 years, you should be rewarded. Comparisons to 2006 Quinta Do Vale "Meao" (WS95/$70) are not unfounded but the Flor de Mouraz remains half the price. Due to limited quantities, I'll leave it at that. 2008 Schafer-Frohlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spatlese GK If you are a collector of German wine, you may want to give this special attention. The winery sold out of this amazing nectar on release last fall and it certainly has a chance to increase in value as the years tick away. It is one of the finest expressions Tim Frohlick has yet produced with ageing potential that should span 30-40 years. With only 20 or so cases of this wine exported to the US (and most of them in the New York market), this has been the most difficult 2008 for us to secure. With that in mind, If you are expecting a lilting example I would steer clear - this is a massive wine to be placed a cold and dark place for the next few decades. Joel B. Payne "...the finest Spatlese of the vintage". Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Port3400 Germ3467
