A nose of molasses and blackcurrant on opening. Very earthy. It softened in the decanter and the black fruit evolved into redcurrant. This was a little past its peak. As we had roasted grouse it was a great excuse to pull out one of the most venerable wines in the cellar.

New Year's Eve 2009 (Chicago IL): Something was not quite right here. From multiple previous experiences with the wine, I did not expect tons of fruit, but there was almost none on the nose; just a very faint hint of dark berries and earth. Slight hint of cork in the background so it was put to the side to come back to later. The cork smell did not get stronger (even on the next day), but it still was totally lifeless.

Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Highly brown tinted dark brick red...light soy sauce hue at the rim. Viscous and sappy in the glass. Spicy marmalade and strawberries, cloves, cinnamon. Lots of age showing on the nose and palate as well. Brown sugar flavors with Nutella (hazelnut) spread! Really cool, but past its prime IMO. Sweetness on the nose. Feminine. Quite elegant and a treat to sample. Seemed older than a '90.

Nice texture in spite of the cork.

New Years 2009 (Chicago, IL): Some red fruits and iron notes, but muted. Consensus was slightly corked.
