  • Barolo at RPM Steak (RPM Steak - Chicago, IL): Decanted for ~5 hours, poured back into bottle, and served a couple hours later. Showed appropriately mature next to the more full throttle 2001. Aromas of aged dried fruit with tar. Medium bodied and more ethereal than powerful. Complex, macerated cherry with balsamico and dried herbs. Nice lingering finish.

  • Decanted about 5, seemed a little pruney, by dinner at 7 it had freshened but still had a roasted note to it. I was a little disappointed (unfairly comparing to the 1989), but Betsy liked it, and by the end of the call it was showing much better. Apparently 4-5 hours in decanter is sweet spot for this, by then it was less roasted, more floral, with tar and mushroom notes over black cherry fruit. C+ at 5, B/B- at 7, B+/A- at 9.

  • At first opening I thought this was pretty far gone. Decanted about 90 minutes before dinner. This really hit its stride during dinner. There was an intriguing/interesting taste of celery at first for a while. Definetely showing its age, but still a very pleasant wine. Some nice acidity that provided some lift to dominant notes of prune and leather.

  • Funny but the first descriptor here was celery and we could all taste it. This was a wine that even with a pre-dinner decant was opening up throughout the course of the meal. It felt like the last few sips in the glass with a lot of air were often the best and then would start the process over again by pouring another glass. More caramel in nature and a bit of the leather. Clearly could tell the age (a lot more than the Gaja next to it). Good wine though.

  • Double decanted a few hours ahead of time.

Structured deep and bright, especially in context of the vintage. Structured but not overbearing, great balance and poise, youthful and with a tension and grace that is really impressive. If I were forced to guess 89 or 90 on this wine blind, I would have guessed '89 in a heartbeat. Power with a sense of effortlessness. There's structure, tar, soil, fruit and even a cool herbal side to it that really adds to the whole. Brooding yet with lift and great balance. A terrific wine and a special success for the vintage.
