  • The cork on this bottle was so pristine, we thought it may either be a late release or recorked, even though it was branded 1974. Very good color, with only slight bricking at the rim. Shows typical ripe raisiny, fig and date flavors upon opening. With air, this filled out and developed additional complexity, and was quite stunning by the end of the evening. I've never had an Amarone this old before, but it showed little resemblance to a young Amarone other than its nose. I can see now how these need time to really show their colors.

  • This was a Winebid purchased bottle. The capsule, cork and fill were all sound. Came out in one piece with a Durand. Initially some cellar funk was worrisome. Splash decanted and returned to the bottle 3 hours before serving. And what a difference it made.

This was an amazing expression of corvina that kept my nose glued to the glass all night. This showed best in a zalto Burgundy compared to a bordeaux glass.

Some even browning of the hue but less than I expected. The nose was captivating with many port-like characteristics. It had sweet figs, dark caramel, sultana raisin, and creme brulee. The palate, on the other hand, tasted like an aged sherry. Bone dry (totally counter to my expectations and the aromatic suggestions above), with oxidative notes (but in no way flawed). Candied citrus, toffee, and caramel popcorn on the long and graceful finish. Wow.

This was a special treat, celebrating the 45th birthday of a dear friend; and the wine couldn’t have showed better. It makes me wonder if these wines are especially resilient, or if the 15% etoh has something to do with it. Either way, one of my best wines of this year.
