1955 First Growth Face Off (El Ideas): From Magnum and disgorged 2008. Pretty yellow gold color with perfect brightness. Surprisingly fresh and clean despite little effervesce. Quite full bodied and nearly lush with a good level of acid bite on the finish. A very nice yet unusual flavor profile showing primary ripe lemon-lime quality. A very nice starter and would have probably rated this higher if bubbles were more prominent.

Golden yellow color. Crazy nose of red berries, spearmint and cat pee. On the palate, really fresh acidity provides a fine backbone to an otherwise mature champagne with no bubbles but intense flavors of dried lemons, varnish, and chalky minerals. Finishes with a strong oxidized note but in a good way. An austere champagne with plenty of life left and it kept improving in the glass for up to an hour. Out of magnum at Beau Rivage Hotel, Geneva, 6/14.

Purchased directly from the Estate Light yellow, clear and fresh looking. The nose had a slight white currant (Tom’s quote) like a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Gorgeous, fresh and still developing. Lemon, honey, nicely effervescent and just kept improving for 2 hours. Tasted at dinner later (4 hours) it was tiring. 96 points
