  • Straight out of the bottle, this is a dead ringer for Fino sherry… saline aroma almost "of the sea", flavors of bruised apple, nutty oxidation and a salty, tangy finish. I was having my initial glass while I was making the chosen food pairing, which was potato gnocchi with sage butter, upon which I shaved a chunk of Comté.
Oh my god what a pairing. The gnocchi just brought out all the nuances out of the wine… creamy butterscotch, roasted almonds, rum raisins… also tamed the oxidative "weirdness". Every sip tasted different. You can choose what flavors to focus on with each sip. Unbelievable.
Totally ready to drink at 13 years of age.

  • The nose is unmistakable. If you have had Vin Jaune once, this wine will give it's pedigree away before you taste it. There is the typical nutty, hazelnut characteristics going on but also some waxy/honey notes coming through. Can anyone say peanut butter and honey on toast? I also noted some subtle candied orange coming in from the back... marmalade on honey and peanut butter! This wine is like breakfast! Not really. But I could do it- it's that good. Finally- butterscotch finishes off the ensemble (but only after a bit of air). The palet is also just as intense and expressive. I would guess this vintage isn't indicative of Vin Jaune as a whole, given the hot year, but, where a lot of regions lost their typicity and were hurt by the intense heat of 03, I would guess that this one either didn't- or was enhanced. Great nuttiness, chalky minerality, a certain shroomey earthiness all with bright applish acidity... not the old/rotten apple you often get with this style. Pair this well. I have tasted without food, but think this will improve with the right meal... in this case roast chicken. This will go for a long time yet, however I see no need to wait for the cellar tracker window to open. It is superb now.
