  • Birthday Dinner 2015 (Mitzo): A lovely Vin Jaune – one of my favourite wines of the night. This was a welcomed burst of fresh, salty goodness towards the end of a heavy dinner. The nose had twangs of oxidative rancio notes and penicillin that were typical Vin Jaune, along with a complex interplay of lemon peel, browned pears and chalk. It was on the palate where the wine really shone though. Super fresh, lively and juicy, it had zesty notes of lime and lemon peel alongside warmer flavours of brown apples and pears, then salty notes of preserved fig peel sprinkled with little pinpricks of spice moving into a long, finish. There was both a great intensity to the wine as well as a lovely complexity, all carried in a soaringly fresh, effortless, almost ageless flow of flavour. Lovely stuff, full of character.
