After reading the reviews, I opened the wine 24 hours in advance, and luckily, I think it would not have been nice and much overpowered otherwise. Now it was better balanced. In the nose, you still had that bombastic pressure of warm red fruit! I must say it wasn't overheated, and there's still acidity to be detected in the mouth. Wine Advocate gives this 100/100, it's certainly not that, but I think it will get better over the next 15/20 years and might come close to that score then!"

An Exploration of 2009 St. Emilions (plus a few bonuses) (Los Olivos, CA): Served blind. A much better showing than when had 2-1/2 years ago as that bottle was pretty soundly asleep. The nose showed black fruit notes and a touch of malo-like aromas. While still quite primary, there was plenty of fruit and good power and length, though I found the wine to be a touch flabby.

Dark, inky purple color. Explosive blackberry, cassis, forest floor bouquet. Unctuous, dense and chewy on palate, had decanted 3 hours before serving— needed more time. Massive potential. Big finish, but too young too drink. Impressive finish, balance good.

2009 Bordeaux Night (plus some nice bonus wines) (A Pristine, COVID-Safe Setting Somewhere in Los Olivos): This badly needed a decant (or a decade). The nose was a blend of mint and mocha, plus some evident oak. There was a phenolic bitterness on the mouth, even after the wine gradually opened with air. Underneath the density, I could detect some black fruit and pepper. The tannins were smooth but drying. In fact, the wine would be best characterized as dry overall, despite the long finish. All ails should be cured with (substantial) time, of course...

Inky in color, the wine is packed and stacked with layers of dark fruits, crushed stone, licorice, coffee bean and opulent textures. Full bodied, concentrated, long, powerful and intense, the wine is not close to maturity. You should hang on to this hard to find wine for at least 7-8 years. But it is going to be worth the wait.
