As with any older Bordeaux, there is risk and reward and this fell squarely into the reward camp. Purchased from a reputable NYC shop in 2023 for a song ($42) to see how a batch of their older (2000 and 2003) Bordeaux was tasting, the 2000 Ormes de Pez vastly outperformed expectations. The wine was dark and youngish upon pouring with a sweetish nose of dark berry and secondary fun scents like tobacco and leather. We didn’t decant and the wine opened nicely over a couple hours with the sweet (in a good way, not like a Napa sugar bomb) fruit holding throughout as some spice and tar came into the mix. Great finish and I had the impression this was stored well and would stay at this plateau for a few more years at least, which is when I will drink my remaining 3 bottles. A great showing overall!

The cork crumbled and was difficult to open. The wine was subdued upon opening, so we recorked and switched to the Lafon 1996 with the steak.
After dinner I thought the wine was improved a bit, with notes of red fruit, forest floor, leaves, earth, mushrooms. But nothing special and no one drank it. I pumped but it was in decline by the next day.
A WineBid bottle of unknown provenance and storage.
Will try the next bottles. No rating.

I wrote a note on this wine about 18 months ago. I just bought a new case of this wine from a different retailer. These particular bottles must’ve been stored even better than the bottle I tried in the past. Upon opening the wine really seemed quite young, closed and tannic, and not really eventful. However, after patiently waiting 6 hours+, it really opened up and it was absolutely gorgeous! Amazing what a good amount of air does sometimes! Couldn’t believe it was the same wine!

Recent purchase amongst some other older Bordeaux. 2000 was a phenomenal vintage and many bottles are in their window right now. However, being a cru bourgeois, I was a bit skeptical as it is a 21-years-old and I thought it would be well past its prime. Absolutely not! Fantastic bottle with an excellent fill level. (Obviously had been stored very well). Definitely drinking, and needs a 2-hour decant and I would say it is not quite at its peak. Will go on for another five to ten years if stored properly. Fantastic QPR for $65! Lovely!

(Château Les Ormes de Pez) Opaque black red violet color; tart black fruit, roast coffee nose; tangy, tart plum, roast coffee, graphite, tar palate; medium-plus finish 92+ pts.
(Les Ormes des Pez) Almost candied nose. Red cherry liquor, minerals, cloth & blueberries. Really dense with structure and showing good length but not much fruit in the middle. Grippy tannins on the finish but the lush fruit spreads out on the finish. The tannins on the finish literally build up like a wall. Great stuff, but very closed and will need at least a decade to come around if not more.

Half bottle. Corked looked good, very little seepage and fill great, but I think it dried out and the wine is oxidized.
