A bit one dimensional, reminds more modern Bx style, powerful but still amazingly fresh. At least 10 more years ahead. You can't deny the high alcohol of 14,5%. 96

  • Kleur: Diep ondoordringbaar donkerrood. Aroma / bouquet: Een diep en donker bouquet. Stoer en krachtig. Kruidig, gedroogd fruit, Smaak / Afdronk: Beperkte zuurgraad. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 15 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 89/100

Colour: Deep impenetrable dark red. Aroma / bouquet: A deep and dark bouquet. Tough and powerful. Spicy, dried fruit, Flavor / Aftertaste: Limited acidity. And tannins that unfortunately are too clear an expression of the heat wave year that was 2003, when grapes ripened so quickly (in terms of balance between acidity and alcohol) due to the high temperature that the wines were often characterized by a certain degree of phenological immaturity: a remnant of (sometimes even greenish) angular tannins due to immature skins and especially seeds. On the one hand, this wine has characteristics of a beautiful matured Ribera del Duero, but in the final the wine shows elements that are too hard, tanninous and too bitter. Shame. Especially with a wine of this caliber, because aeration is not going to fix this. General / Potential: The tasting notes of this wine on CT range from brilliant to mediocre at best. The phenomenon of 'phenolic immaturity' is not known to everyone. However, there is a solution: combine this wine with food and the tannin (experience!) disappears like snow in the sun. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Taste / Aftertaste: 15 + General / potential: 8 = 89/100

  • My first Pingus and really quite impressive. Even with two decades since vintage, this is super young. And, given the hot vintage, it's surprisingly fresh. Lots of depth and concentration. It'll be interesting to see where this goes -- but I suspect it's destination is going to be pretty impressive.

  • The 2003 Pingus is an extremely young wine, but I found myself writing "beautiful" nonetheless. It's amazing that in such a hot vintage, this stays on the right side of the line and avoids overripeness. This is fresh. This really shouldn't be broached for another 5 years or so.

  • Strongly disagree with recent reviews of this wine. Thought it had enormous depth and integrity; beautiful finish; chocolate, spice, cedar box. Held up against steaks very well. Glad I have two more bottles. Very special wine.
