  • The main driver behind drinking wine must be the thrill to open a 30 year old bottle of Austrian Riesling Smaragd, revealing a remarkable freshness & a totally unexpected interplay between intense fruit, moreish structure & graceful ageing. Such is Domäne Wachau’s version, immediately consumed upon popping the bottle. Dark & shiny golden in appearance. Lifted & refined nose bursting w ripe yellow apples & pears, tropical notes, hints of petroleum. Palate is so much alive & kicking, bright acidity, fine structure. Delicious, still w a potential to develop in bottle. Truly impressive stuff.

  • Occasional tasting group: Top Austria (@ JdZ): Dark yellow. Some petrol and minerals like flint stone in the bouquet. Clearly green apple in the taste, but not as green as Granny Smith. Some citrus as well. Light acidity and very light bitterness. The aftertaste is medium and not very convincing. Although a very pleasant wine, it misses some complexity and is possibly a little too old.
