  • A very ripe vintage marked by tropical fruit flavors and botrytis notes of honey and syrup. Classy petrol flavors, almost oily texture. For my palate this is slightly too ripe and low in acidity, prefer the crisper vintages, but this definitely has class and style and should continue to age well for at least another 5 years. - 90 points

  • The ripe vintage shows in this wine, which is full of tropical fruit flavors, with rather low acidity and some floral and honey notes from botrytis on the finish. I clearly prefer the cooler vintages, but this is a good drink. - 89 points

  • A bit musky, almondy nose of balsamesque citrus fruit, dry apricot, spices, smoke and a hint of petrol. A really complex, racy nose that instantly raises one's interest. Pungent yes, but nothing really dominates so it's all good. The mouthfeel is somewhat oily at first but somewhere along the line the acidity picks up and leads to clean, pithy finish. The flavor profile is a bit Neuburger-like, being that it's quite almondy and not obviously fruit forward at all, but there is definitely some citrus and apple fruit along with some pure stony notes. Dry yet gentle and well-proportioned. At first I was a bit underwhelmed but this wine definitely grew on me and worked tremendously at the dinner table, paired with organic pan fried salmon and hollandaise sauce. The pairing made the wine taste a bit metallic but for some reason I really enjoyed the effect. I like that fact that these DW Smaragds are powerful without being heavy, and this one's even got some airiness to it. Some heat on the finish unfortunately, but overall a dry Riesling of interest and high quality. Moreish, yet each sip leaves one weirdly satisfied.

  • ‚Achleiten‘ is one of the most legendary vineyards in the Wachau (village of Weißenkirchen). An oily, powerful dry Riesling wine, straw yellow in color with golden reflexes and a complex floral nose of white blossoms, rose petals, peaches and some banana aromas. Good density and concentration on the palate, revealing perfectly balanced yellow fruit, a good mineral texture together with a fine integrated acidity. Serious aftertaste with a surprising touch of botrytis.
