| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.5 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 143 notes) | | | Tasted by PBaird on 1/30/2010 & rated 91 points: Inky dark color. Moderate intensity, complex nose of black cherries, cloves, smoke and iron shavings. Lovely on the palate-- superb balance, lively, juicy red fruits with good balancing acidity, dark chocolate, cloves and a touch of mineral/metal. Moderate tannins and acidity balance the fruit on the VERY long finish. (345 views) | | | Tasted by Nutty08 on 1/12/2010 & rated 89 points: Big aromatic nose of ripe red and dark fruits--blackberries, plum, and a really fantastic spice note. Palate is slightly over done, with ripe spicy herbal fruit, but just a touch simple. Medium herbal finish with a little heat. Wonderful ripe fruit and spiciness for a $10 grenache. (722 views) | | | Tasted by hutch on 1/8/2010 & rated 85 points: Very ripe, as in over ripe. Just too much. The joke was this should be sold as an OV Zin, but I guess it sells elsewhere quite well. Not here though. No notes. (1235 views) | | | Tasted by JPoll on 12/20/2009 & rated 90 points: Drank with a prime rib, very soft and subtle tannins with a medium finish. (1115 views) | | | Tasted by vinotoad on 12/20/2009 & rated 89 points: Dark and concentrated - a beautiful wine to look at - nose shows dark berries and some pencil lead - I would suggest decanting for a minimum of 1 hour (1103 views) | | | Tasted by z_willus_d on 12/18/2009 & rated 84 points: 2hr decant in med-base decanter. COLOR- magenta turned dark-purple, low viscosity. NOSE- violets after spring rain, laundromat, plum/blackberry; nice but a little thin. PALATE- there's a lot of the same from the bouquet showing in the flavors. The mouthfeel is light-weight and a little watery, like sugar added to crushed flowers in mountain spring water. This seems dominated by the floral detergent aspects with a little blackberry thrown in as well. Tannins are apparent but the structure is weak for the most part. I don't like that the finish is short to almost disappearing. Overall, this is a little disjointed at this stage and probably needs a year to show better. I like the flavors and floral-press here, but I get a hint of VA too, which is somewhat disconcerting. I'm not so gaga for this one, though I guess it drinks about what it should for what you pay. (1396 views) | | | Tasted by jdoakpark on 12/12/2009 & rated 90 points: really nice. Will only get better with age. (1544 views) | | | Tasted by Jimbot on 12/7/2009 & rated 90 points: Delicious, as always. Black cherry dusty grenache nose with blackberry and graphite in the back. Just a tad short, but well worth the price tag. (1753 views) | | | Tasted by sweaty on 11/26/2009 & rated 90 points: I think, just guessing, it's a bit early to drink this. I mean, it's blue ribbon, but I'd like it to taste it more mature. The structure and mouthfeel are approaching something meant for aging. I agree with just about everybody else's thoughts. (1752 views) | | | Tasted by rumpole on 11/22/2009 & rated 90 points: classic Calatayud grenache and an excellant value (1896 views) | | | Tasted by jdoakpark on 11/11/2009 & rated 88 points: very nice. a great vale.....dark fruit and berries with nice mouthfeel and finish. | By Gary Vaynerchuk Wine Library TV, Wine Tasting in Enemy Territory - Episode #750 (10/8/2009) (Zabrin Atteca) #3; VaynerPAZZZ; COLOR-dark; NOSE-heavy orange peel, but a chemical / detergent component makes this a difficult nose; very "science project" more than fruit; doesn't seem real to me; PALATE-really ripe tannins make for a bitter back-end; chocolate is a dominant presence; well made, but I don't really like it; a little textbook; it comes across like it's a big wine, but then it thins out; I like the chocolate, but the blackberry and mulberry are not enough to carry the day; GV-83 83 points | NOTE: Scores and reviews are the property of Wine Library TV. Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net
Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
