100% Garnacha from centenarian vineyards planted at the turn of the 20th century. Aged for 10 months in oak barrels. 14,5% alcohol.
Luminous, deep and moderately translucent cherry red color. Vibrant nose of ripe red plums, some wild strawberries, a little bit of bilberry, light evolved meaty tones, a hint of savory wood spice, a sweet touch of dried figs and a whiff of alcohol. The wine is ripe, solar and somewhat sweet-toned on the palate with quite bold flavors of strawberries, some soft red plums, a little bit of savory wood spice, light evolved notes of meaty umami, a sweet hint of dried figs and a touch of toasty oak spice. The overall feel is textural but also somewhat soft and round, thanks to the medium acidity and sparse, ripe and almost fully resolved tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. The finish is long, somewhat warm and gently tannic with flavors of savory wood spice, some strawberry tones, a little bit of bittersweet dark chocolate, light evolved notes of meaty umami, a sweet hint of dried figs and a touch of ferrous blood.
A juicy and tasty old vine Garnacha that is a bit on the fat side. The wine shows some evolution, but retains still quite a good bit of vibrant, youthful fruit, so for that part it doesn't seem like the wine would fall apart anytime soon. However, structurally the wine has softened up considerably and really doesn't call for any additional aging - even now the wine is a bit too flabby for my taste and could actually use a bit more acidity and tannins. This is good and enjoyable stuff, but the softness and lack of energy keep the wine from being truly great. Even though the wine might keep good for years, I see no upside to keeping it any further - time to drink up.

When this was released it was hot, over the top and extremely tannic. Some of the tannins are integrated but there are still some lingering on the finish where they lend a bitter tone. I don't think these big spoofy Spanish reds ever get any better with age, definitely not my thing, and I could kill the wine store owner who foisted a case of this on me.

Easy drinking with some nice flavors, bacon on the nose, the fruit tasting somewhat fake, still drinking well with some light tannins on the finish, a decent enough wine but nothing special.

Medium red, rather opaque colour. In the nose ripe and rather concentrated red berries (strawberries and raspberries), some spice and tar, and a hint of developed notes. Medium+ body, on the palate slightly sweetish fruit with red berries, just a touch of bitterness, some spice, medium tannin of reasonably soft character mid-palate, but a bit more tannic in the aftertaste where there is also some red berries. Overall I'd say its 14,5% alcohol is well integrated and it isn't too sweet either. There is a bit of a feeling of beginning development over the wine, and I'm not sure it would really gain from more extended cellaring.

Decanted first for a short time. The color was garnet. The nose had nice aroma's of dark berries and earth. The palate was smooth, full, rich and luscious with a spicy lingering finish. We enjoyed this wine very much. 5,13,15,6=89

This is a wine that hits my "like" notes perfectly. Deep, dark and inky with rough-but-still-velvety texture sitting on top of minerally graphite. Big fruit is plum, cherry and boysenberry. Really nice wine.

Tasted after a half-hour decant. Very dark maroon, almost black. Crushed rock and black fruit aroma. Rich black and red fruit although not complex. Very fresh and smooth. Reasonably subdued alcohol level that should help with food. Spectacular QPR.

Superbe grenache espagnole. 88-89

Pepper over cassis on a strong fruity nose. The palate is fruit forward yet not extracted feeling. Light tannin in the dry finish that shows decent acidity, even some minerals. The fruit has a slight bitter quality but overall this is real nice for the price. A fairly big fruited wine in balance.

Dark purple wine, with an earthy, cranberry, cherry nose. Rich, round and smooth, but with a really nice structure. Perhaps some mushroom, kirsch, or amerretto? Almost tastes like an aussie shiraz or some big rhones.

Dark purple with lighter violet rim. Nice rich aroma of blackberries, almost jammy. Not at all jammy in taste though. Light to medium bodied. Good fruit, slight spice in background/afterwards. Nice wine at a nice price.

Just a good, basic spanish grenache style wine. I think some of these ratings are a bit high but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Nothing remarkable about this wine, but nothing bad stands out either. A bit of funk early on the nose. Notes of dark berries, bittersweet cocoa, and almond. Short but hot finish, kinda reminds me of chili/chocolate aftertaste. Probably worth the $15 I paid. "PBaird" got the "iron shavings" note right.

Inky dark color. Moderate intensity, complex nose of black cherries, cloves, smoke and iron shavings. Lovely on the palate-- superb balance, lively, juicy red fruits with good balancing acidity, dark chocolate, cloves and a touch of mineral/metal. Moderate tannins and acidity balance the fruit on the VERY long finish.

Big aromatic nose of ripe red and dark fruits--blackberries, plum, and a really fantastic spice note. Palate is slightly over done, with ripe spicy herbal fruit, but just a touch simple. Medium herbal finish with a little heat. Wonderful ripe fruit and spiciness for a $10 grenache.

2hr decant in med-base decanter. COLOR- magenta turned dark-purple, low viscosity. NOSE- violets after spring rain, laundromat, plum/blackberry; nice but a little thin. PALATE- there's a lot of the same from the bouquet showing in the flavors. The mouthfeel is light-weight and a little watery, like sugar added to crushed flowers in mountain spring water. This seems dominated by the floral detergent aspects with a little blackberry thrown in as well. Tannins are apparent but the structure is weak for the most part. I don't like that the finish is short to almost disappearing. Overall, this is a little disjointed at this stage and probably needs a year to show better. I like the flavors and floral-press here, but I get a hint of VA too, which is somewhat disconcerting. I'm not so gaga for this one, though I guess it drinks about what it should for what you pay.

I love this wine, it's an excellent representation of Garnacha from Spain, very tasty - Dark, well concentrated with a nose of plum, cherry, spice and vanilla, very well balanced and complex, nice weight and structure, very smooth on the palate with excellent length (90 Points).

I think, just guessing, it's a bit early to drink this. I mean, it's blue ribbon, but I'd like it to taste it more mature. The structure and mouthfeel are approaching something meant for aging. I agree with just about everybody else's thoughts.

Very nice fruit on the top and a solid mid palete taste. Cherries to start and moving to darker fruits through the mouth. Very nice color. A good Spanish garnache that combine the fruit my wife likes without being light weight, and enough heft and a bit of earth to go well for my taste. Good balance and good price point.

what a deal! The wine was opened and Had it with Paella we made on the stove top with shrimp and chicken. The wine was exactly what one would expect of a good garnacha. In fact, Close your eye, and it taste like a good CdR. The finish, while not super long, but enjoyable. What a price for a good wine. Def. would get more.

Came into balance after 20 minutes of air. Black fruit with hints of licorice and funk on the nose. Round and soft on the palate with sweet black fruit and spice. Easy to drink but shows a rather abrupt and sterile finish. Drink now.

A thick bouquet of Black cherry, cedar and vanilla to match the deep ruby color of the wine. Round and supple in the mouth with medium body and decent acidity. Loads of dark berries from the old vines - black cherries and blackberries dominate. On the finish, the dark berries fade, leaving some spiceiness and smoke, with good length on the finish overall. The tannins are firm, but restrained & the wine is balanced throughout. An excellent value overall.

Nice red fruit on the nose with some meaty funk. Very rustic in the mouth...not over the top fruit like some Spanish Garnacha. Decent overall but falls just short of being an excellent wine. Still a great QPR...maybe my expectations were too high.

This is a big favorite in my neck of the woods. There is a reason for this. A very nice combination of big, in your face, new world fruitiness, and old world earthy charm. This is why we love Grenache. The smell and taste help us imagine a very sunny, but still moderately temperate climate. It is very dark, almost inky, but still balanced, and almost elegant. There is plenty of alcohol. Blueberry and boysenberry fruit. You can tell there is some oak aging. And on the finish we get some peppery spice. Very nice.

This is the best Spanish garnacha I've had at this price range. It's got sweet fruit in the cherry range (a little less of the strawberry and raspberry profile than I usually expect in grenache), with some candied berry and some exotic spices. Plush mouthfeel, but better structured than I expected.

matched up with a 2004 whitehal lane merlot at a backyard gathering. 3 out of 5 preferred the merlot. I loved the nose on the merlot, but my WOTN was the Atteca. The QPR just puts it over the top and in my bin's.
Enjoy!

Opened and served immediately. Followed over about 2 hours. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of blueberries, jam, black berries, smoke and cassis. Flavors of rich berries, boysenberries, plum and cassis. Just a dash of greeness on the short to medium finish so docked a notch for that. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink now with a little air time or over the short term, maybe the medium term if you want to push it but I wouldn't.

My sister connected me to this wine because she knows my palate and thought I would like it. She is right on the mark! Dark purple/red in the glass. When first poured, smelled like smoked ham. Medium bodied, not jammy, a great lively very cherry taste. If I didn't know better, I'd guess this was made from cherries, not grapes. Not overly complex or complicated, not too long on the finish. A great perky happy wine. On the second day, it had lost some of its verve but was still enjoyable.

A: Purple blue red clear. N: Chocolate skunk spice (yum). Artificial musty banana with a touch of herbal sweetness. This makes it sound bad but it really was not. T: Delicate vineyness with nice tannins. Reminded me of Fondue with blueberries and blackberries. F: Bit woody and closed after about 10 seconds of something nondescript. Overall: Light and a bit flaccid. Opened up after an hour to coco and black fruits. V: 4/5

Nose of brett/barnyard, spices, thyme. Palate fruity and very spicy, with a little cinnamon coming through on the spices noted on the nose. medium length finish with a little mineral, but a little clipped. Fun wine, but doesn't have the complexity of better wines and a little too much brett for me. Doesn't resemble the '06 much as i remember it. After a few days open, much of the brett blows off and develops a wonderful spiciness that I love in grenache wines. Fantastic QPR.

Retailer tasting. This wine is 100% Grenache made from vines which are 90-120 years old. 14.5% alcohol but it did not show much heat. Notes of ripe berries. Not as much body as the Juan Gil but it was rounder. 89-90 points.

This one hit on all the right points for my taste. Savory meat and fruit on the nose. Dark red to purple color, medium+, with some legs. Opens savory, then over to more fruit & stays consistent across the mid-palate to a lasting finish. Not getting the ham-thing described in other notes. Well balanced, getting some spices, not too much oak or a puckering mouth feel. Will definitely go out and get more.

Just delicious for the money. Needs an hour or so to soften up and then it's a juicy, big, brawny but not over the top wine. Lots of deep fruit as well as burnt oak, fine tannins and lots of dark notes. This can age for a year or three, but drinks well now. Very long for a wine of this price.

Very tart, and tight. I think I just don;t care for the grenache grape. Decanted for several hours, and it just didn't do much for me. I won't rate this as I'm not sure that I can do so fairly since I learned at the tasting that I don't really care for this particular varietal.

Wine Guild of Charlottesville does Spanish Values with Country Vintner (Guild offices): Spicy red fruit on the nose. The palate, however, was much different than expected: the red fruit and spice are there, but the mouthfeel is surprisingly soft and lush. Made in a fruit-driven New World kind of style, I found myself going back for second and third tastes just to try to understand this wine better. A fantastic, super-accessible take on Grenache for those looking to learn more.

Dark and opaque purple. Sweet, almost candied nose of cherry, plum and vanilla. Perhaps a boysenberry pie quality For lack of a better word, the wine came across as very "grenachy" to me. On the palate, the wine is just bursting with bright cherry fruit. The fruit is on the riper side, but there is some zippy acidity that saves it from being completely OTT. The wine has a manipulated feel, and it suffers from a lack of balance. It really feels unintegrated to me. I liked the vivacity of the fruit, but the lack of harmony kept me from buying more. It was actually better on night two -- it wasn't quite as vibrant, but had come together quite a bit more. I still think I'll pass on more of the wine.

hue: dark ruby, medium bodied, nose: ham/bacon, spices, smoke, mouth: sweet, smokey. ham aromas are kind of overpowering, medium acidity, medium-to-strong tannins, bitter/spicy aftertaste I don't eat ham and don't like the smell of it -- so this is a loser for me. 2nd glass (let it decant in glass for 45 mins or so) - ham aroma is decreased due to the addition of dark fruits. Aftertaste is slightly reduced. Tannins still strong. A little better. This wine is probably best left in the bottle a year or two, and should be properly decanted for an hour at least. Was the best on the third day – ham aromas subsided a bit, more fruity, more acidic, less aftertaste.

Nice nose of deep fruit, and smoke. Spicy too. Actually surprised me initially, but as a previous taster noted, the finish is hot and awkward. However for $12.00, this is a very nice QPR. On another note, this Atteca Old Vines, is the baby brother of the Atteca Armas which has everything this one lacks. Yes, it costs more but it has age and nice minerality which this young sibling lacks.

An outstanding wine in its subtlety. The aroma has tobacco and muted fruits of blueberry and plum. The fruits come through on the tongue but subtley. There is also some pepper and spice. This is a great change from the strong fruit of California or Australia and it is a great price, too.

a great sub $20 wine. fruit forward, full bodied. dark violet in hue. some funk on the nose initially that blew off after 30-45 minutes. really hit its stride after 60-90 minutes. somewhat silky mouthfeel with a pretty balanced finish. dark fruits on the nose and palate with just a bit of old world earth and herb qualities underneath the fruit. you can't ask for much more in the $15 price range. spain continues to reign as the QPR champ for me and this offering is a perfect example why.

This one was a little quirky on first opening but settled down very nicely after about an hour. This vintage is more reserved the past two previous vintages and much more "Old World" in style then the last 2 years which were definitely in the New World tradition of bursting fruit forwardness.

Superbe grenache espagnole. Belle matière.
Nez : envoutant, frais, intensément fruité, épicé, minéral, profond
Bouche : très belle matière, acidité rafraîchissante à faible, faible amertume, sec, rétro très fruitée
Conclusion : très belle grenache. Un peu plus d'acidité pour la faire vibrer serait de mise.

A bit of funk early on the nose. Notes of dark berries, bittersweet cocoa, and almond. Short but hot finish, kinda reminds me of chili/chocolate aftertaste. Probably worth the $15 I paid. "PBaird" got the "iron shavings" note right.

Very nice.

Fun wine, but doesn't have the complexity of better wines and a little too much brett for me. Doesn't resemble the '06 much as i remember it.

I don't eat ham and don't like the smell of it -- so this is a loser for me.

Nice nose of smoke, bacon, and dark fruits. Nice acidity initially, however finishes with a bitter harshness that took alot of the enjoyment away from the wine. OK, but probably wont buy again.

Decanted for about 2 hours.
Nose was nice with dark fruit, smoke, cassis...perhaps a little herb
Palate mimiced the nose with the addition of medium tannins and a slightly dryer finish than I expected...overall I really like this wine especially for the price!

Clear, medium intensity ruby. Clean, light-medium intensity aromas of blackberry, cherry, some earth, smoke. Medium acid, medium tannin, medium finish. Flavors match aromas, and add some layers of herbs, ripe red berry, mineral notes on the finish. Amazing QPR at $12. Would recommend and will buy more.

An outstanding wine in its subtlety. The aroma has tobacco and muted fruits of blueberry and plum. The fruits come through on the tongue but subtley. There is also some pepper and spice. This is a great change from the strong fruit of California or Australia and it is a great price, too.

Purple to dark purple color, intense nose of strawberry, raspberry and some pepper. Ripe red fruits (Strawbwerry, cherry) with a rich mouthfeel, supported by some pepper and vanilla. Very lush, but not too over the top. Great QPR.

a great sub $20 wine. fruit forward, full bodied. dark violet in hue. some funk on the nose initially that blew off after 30-45 minutes. really hit its stride after 60-90 minutes. somewhat silky mouthfeel with a pretty balanced finish. dark fruits on the nose and palate with just a bit of old world earth and herb qualities underneath the fruit. you can't ask for much more in the $15 price range. spain continues to reign as the QPR champ for me and this offering is a perfect example why.

I thought this might be an upgrade from the "Fuego" which sells for half the price of the Atteca, but it isn't worth it.

Dark, nose of red fruits and vanilla. Smooth on the palate, this was a crowd pleaser. Easy drinking.

Another big hit on x-mas eve and an excellent value. Great interplay of old and new world. Palate has earth, herbs and exoitc spices accenting rich strawberry fruit. Pure, focused fruit on the palate belies the price point. Terrific presence, balance and length on the palate.

This one was a little quirky on first opening but settled down very nicely after about an hour. This vintage is more reserved the past two previous vintages and much more "Old World" in style then the last 2 years which were definitely in the New World tradition of bursting fruit forwardness.

Kind of tight in the beginning, took a while to open up. When it did, the wine was quite nice. Very bright red fruit flavors and a bit of earthiness to balance it out. Finish was fairly balanced; it's a well made wine.

Unbelievable value!!! This wine is 100% grenache from 80 to 120 year old vines, grown at 3000 feet of elevation that see 100% new french oak. Nose of black cherry, black raspberry, smoke, and cedar, with well integrated tannins. Ripe and rich flavors lead to a lovely, long finish - astonishing for the price.

Nice wine with lots of fruit. Nose with blackberries and strawberries. The fruits melt together. A little jam-like felling. Light on the tongue. Good with meet on the grill. Taste with light tannins, medium body but nice round taste. Fruity but not sweet.
