Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.9 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 122 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by amateur62 on 2/1/2024 & rated 92 points: Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Merlot 46% and Petit Verdot 4%. 13% vol. Perfect fill and cork.

Decanted half an hour before dinner and served it rather cool (~16°C). On the nose dark fruited, leather and a hint of forest floor, on the palate fresh and dry, good depth and long finish.

Classic old school Médoc, was perfect with cheese, dried sausages and bread. In a nice spot now, less mature and more elegant than the bottle I had two years ago, drink now or within the next ten years. (425 views)
Tasted by drfloyd on 7/30/2023: Still hanging in there but fully mature - drink up. Fruit is a bit faded but overall nice - tertiary notes, some dead leaves, mushrooms, etc. but still decent fruit to balance. Good but no reason not to finish these off… (804 views)
 Tasted by rudi77 on 3/22/2023 & rated 94 points: 부드럽고 실키함~마지막에 담배향과 긴 피니쉬 (1243 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 2/10/2023 & rated 88 points: Ikke dekantert. Småpen, imøtekommende, kjørlig. Stadig pen dag 2, men likegyldig. (1055 views)
Tasted by Dj6544 on 1/11/2023: Have a real soft spot for this one. Consistently delicious and no sign of changing. (1416 views)
Tasted by winenoob101 on 12/23/2022 & rated 92 points: Just a classic aged left bank nose. Black currant, cigar ash, blackberry and cedar. The fruit has a beautiful clarity to it.
The taste is long, acid and tannins are beggining to soften. I suspect that well stored bottles can be kept a bit longer. (1146 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/19/2022 & rated 90 points: 2009 red Burgundies, TDS x CMJ (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Some tar and herbal aromatics on the nose, and with the tannic structure, it was a "sure thing" that this was nebbiolo. Whoops. Of course, the colour was very much not nebbiolo. Not too complex, but pleasant, reasonably old-school Bordeaux in a classic vintage. (1809 views)
Tasted by amateur62 on 10/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Merlot 46% and Petit Verdot 4%.

Decanted an hour before dinner. A bit more than two years since the last bottle. On the nose a tad more mature now, dark fruited with a bunch of tertiary notes, quite intense. On the palate it shows still some edges, slightly rustic, good freshness, full bodied and long finish.

Old school Médoc, fully mature, not the most elegant but solid, with character and it delivers for the money. Drink now or within the next 8 years, a short decant is enough. (990 views)
Tasted by Patrick_from_champagne on 10/5/2022 & rated 89 points: Chasse spleen is always pleasant after 15 years
That wine was very good offering all features of a classy and mature Bardeaux. (942 views)
Tasted by drfloyd on 6/29/2022: Drinking well here - really enjoyable and even solid on day 4… (1171 views)
Tasted by Dj6544 on 6/1/2022 & rated 93 points: Not sure if this is improving but it really does taste very good. That green pepper streak with the rich berry alongside savoury cedar and fresh acidity is great. Suspect this will keep but worth enjoying now. (1183 views)
Tasted by Perthor01 on 5/13/2021 & rated 91 points: nice aging bordeaux - still years ahead of it.... (2142 views)
Tasted by jkoenen on 11/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Lovely. Just lovely.
This is drinking great right now.
Surprisingly soft and open, beautifully balanced. In the mouth it showed dollops of dark chery cobbler, forestfloor and clay, graphite and tobacco, ink and autumn leaves.
A very good wine from "the last affordable vintage in Bordeaux". (2362 views)
Tasted by Screwcaps on 10/28/2020 & rated 91 points: Double decanted at 5am back in to the bottle, then enjoyed at 5pm. The last glass was best, don’t be afraid to give it air. Deep brick colour. Fully developed. Still some charry Moulis notes, with leather, tobacco, oyster shell/gravel. A touch drying through the finish, this is drinking well now and unlikely to develop further but will hold for some years. Enjoyed with v2010 with dear friends, which is excellent and drinking well already without a decant. (2444 views)
Tasted by rSyver on 10/13/2020 & rated 88 points: Mirrors my previous note on the wine. (2177 views)
Tasted by christyler on 9/18/2020 & rated 91 points: Classic claret. Tweedy and rustic. Probably the spirit animal and preferred drink of an octogenarian Oxford professor. (2250 views)
Tasted by mukden on 6/8/2020 & rated 87 points: NO. Rating right maybe a bit lower. Clearly not a great wine that is now played out. Flat no fruit. (2046 views)
Tasted by AnonymousCoward on 5/8/2020 & rated 90 points: Nice, but not amazing. Up against a Yerinberg 2004, this didn't come up as well. (1882 views)
Tasted by daghaug on 5/1/2020: Tobakk og litt blyant. Hint av maling. Innsmigrende duft. Frisk i anslaget, god også i munnen, men mangler litt frukt nå og blir litt endimensjonal. God vin likevel.

Blir faktisk bedre utover dag 2. Litt lakris kommer til og frukten åpner seg litt. (1811 views)
Tasted by amateur62 on 3/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted 30 min before dinner. Starts quite expressive with dark berries and a hint of tertiary notes, good freshness, medium to full bodied and long finish, rather young impression with a modern touch. With more air the primary fruit disappears and the wine gets a bit shy with rather classical profile and some edges in the finish. If you like the wine on the fruit, drink now and do not decant, if you like mature wines with tertiary notes a long decant or some more years of cellaring is recommended. 91-92 points. (1910 views)
Tasted by rSyver on 12/29/2019 & rated 88 points: I enjoyed this one - the typical Bordeaux elements are there, although the complexity is bit limited which I find OK at this level. Good balance, OK length. Linear but good. Drinking well now, no immediate rush. (2011 views)
Tasted by drfloyd on 6/6/2019: No formal note but I was blown away at the fruit density - in your face but well balanced and flat out delicious. Perfect with some rib eyes on the grill. (2175 views)
Tasted by Norwegian Commandeur on 5/3/2019 & rated 92 points: Left in bottle for 1.5 hours. Closed to begin with, then opened up nicely. Classic Bordeaux. Medium body. Very smooth, tutti frutti-esque palate. Not too complex, but highly drinkable. Drink now till 2021. 92-93p. (2280 views)
Tasted by Raage on 4/28/2019 & rated 86 points: Chez Guy
(2316 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 11/24/2018 flawed bottle: (Slightly corked) (Decanted for two hours)
Deep red colour with a maturing nose showing red berries, pepper and herbs. Palate shows softening tannins with primary fruit,
(Probably best 2014-2029) (1543 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.
