| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by StefanAkiko on 4/30/2022 & rated 93 points: This is still a young rascal. However, beautifully tightly knit. This is old style, restrained greatness in a bottle. Would love to find more!
Great today, even better ten years down the line. (742 views) | | Tasted by DJPA on 10/9/2018 & rated 93 points: Delicious. Drinking perfectly right now. Even slightly better on 2nd night after chilled overnight storage. (1948 views) | | Tasted by Bin707LoversDetroit on 9/16/2018 & rated 93 points: There's cinnamon on the nose. Chestnut coffee too- and is that blueberry?…
First sips- at pop n pour- had some heat that eventually burned off.
No displeasing tannins, eight years in and those have shipped off nicely. The cohesive balance really shined through. A velvety, jammy, luscious beverage after an hour open. A real treat.
Great balance, as it rolls in a bit smoky, some dust, then it’s gone, fruity- then smooths out to an earthiness, but not old-dirt-like… An hour aeration and, like our past Plexus (2008- enjoyed in May '18), it has evolved into some downright Down Under wizardry.
Again grateful for Asiago cheese, our homemade sausage and red grapes; each of which shared our palate with this bold juice.
Well put together, an integrated whole.
And the finish goes on.
This bottle showed NO signs of being near extinction. We could have left it in the cellar for another year or more, but tonight, as the movie got going, the wine Turned ON!
From pop-n-sip (89 pts) to completion (93), it just kept getting better.
Enjoy! (2267 views) | | Tasted by knorthrip on 3/28/2018 & rated 89 points: Nearing the end of its life. (2212 views) | | Tasted by CWilliam on 6/26/2017 & rated 92 points: Tasted double blind in "interesting reds" tasting.
Guessed new world Syrah blend.
Dark cherry, blackberry, saline on nose- full body, good acidic structure & medium+ finish with integrated tannins.
This drank very well -92+/- (2991 views) | | Tasted by pgb67 on 4/17/2017 & rated 94 points: Succulent and powerful, supple mouthfeel, effortless balance, full-bodied but still silky and velvety, blueberry and blackberry flavors, more berries on the aromatic profile with smoky oak accents, spice-infused finish. A really nice bottle of wine. (2552 views) | | Tasted by Mjsmoot on 12/28/2016 & rated 90 points: Very well balanced with soft tannins. The nose hints at eucalyptus with ripe blackberry and raspberry carrying the way. On the palate this wine had wonderful dark berry flavor with notes of toasted vanilla oak during a lengthy finish. Decanted for an hour and drank well from the very first glass. (1549 views) | | Tasted by Jimmy_D on 7/18/2015 & rated 90 points: One of the better and most reliable examples of Barrossa GSM. Juicy red and black fruit but with a savoury edge to it. Some chocolate and mint in the background. Fine tannins and a long-ish finish. Most Plexus drink best in the 5-8 year range, this no exception. (2627 views) | | Tasted by BSZach1 on 2/28/2015 & rated 89 points: Very rhone like!!! (2565 views) | | Tasted by marcellevi on 11/10/2014 & rated 90 points: Deep dark violet, bold ripe cherry and berry nose, touch of mint. Smooth, rich and juicy raspberry fruit, some sweet tart action. Fairly complex fruit forward wine. Better than a few months ago. (2326 views) | | Tasted by Schiffy on 9/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Nicely layered, inky Aussie Shiraz blend. Rich, dark berry fruit with chocolate notes. Soft tannins and moderate structure...just pop and pour. Nice drinking wine but not overly complex. (2420 views) | | Tasted by lifeattable on 1/20/2014: It’s a bit ornery at this stage. There’s oak, sure, and big berry flavor. Teases of tobacco, earth, smoke and a peppery finish make me think this one will only get better with a few years on its side. Past experience with Plexus suggests by year 8 or so it'll be singing. A bit disappointing given the hype of the vintage and my positive experiences with other vintages of this wine. Perhaps it will settle into a more integrated and improved wine with time. John Duval began his self-titled label in 2003. Duval graduated from Adelaide University in 1973 with a degree in agriculture and winemaking before becoming a winemaker for Penfolds for the next 29 years. Duval was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986 and was lucky enough to oversee one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. He received Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989; Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000; and saw the 1990 Penfolds Grange named Wine of the Year by the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995. Duval focuses on fruit from older vines in Barossa, including Rhone varietals, leading to one of his stellar ones, "Plexus."Red Rhone Blend Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.
A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
