Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 256 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ruminator on 3/18/2024 & rated 91 points: Medium garnet brown. Bricking a little bit, but not much for a 35 year-old wine.

Cedar, graphite, forest floor, and violet. Vibrant fruit of black cherry and black currant has surprisingly rich chocolaty depth. High acidity and leather brett leads to a very savory finish with salami, olive, and tobacco leaf notes.

Medium body, high acidity, tannin still has a little grip.

12.5% ABV. An old school Medoc where its high acidity lets all flavor elements dance in the mouth. Very enjoyable with nice tertiary characters. A great food wine, too. (601 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 3/2/2024: Opened with Bruce E. in Tucson and drunk there and in Bisbee. Still doing very well. Bruce was impressed. (662 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 2/22/2024 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby/garnet core, narow pale garnet rim. This has a classic claret nose - blackcurrant, tobacco, gravel notes - good depth of fruit, fresh acidity and grippy tannins on the good length finish. Excellent, probably one to drinkg sooner rather than later. (621 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 2/22/2024 & rated 90 points: 1989 Bordeaux Horizontal - London (Piccolino, Exchange Square): One of two sourced at auction about 15 years ago. Very similar to one consumed around then. Charming nose with plenty of tobacco, some cedar and a little marron glacé sweetness. With air there's some beef pho to the nose as well. Palate is drying a little but there's still lots to like here with beautifully resolved tannins and lovely structure. (700 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 1/25/2024 & rated 95 points: Second of three bought during a cellar sale, with a like-new fill, very shiny capsule, and a perfect, very tight cork that was only soaked a quarter of an inch. Didn’t need the Durand at all but used it just to be safe.

Very dark, only showing some garnet while pouring. I decanted for sediment and it was off to the races with a glorious nose of black cherry pipe tobacco and a very silky, highly concentrated palate filled with notes of undergrowth, aged black cherry, tobacco, some soft red fruits, and a core of roasted black plums. The finish was very long.

This bottle was probably at the apex of its mature development phase. Everything was not only still there but more importantly still there in the right proportions so that the wine was in excellent balance—there were plenty of aged fruits to go with the perfect acidity and dusty tannins. A tour de force. There was a port-like note that came and went, suggesting, perhaps, that decline was imminent, but this did not detract very much. The only thing that could have elevated the score for me would have been a bit more nuanced complexity.

This really must have been a big, fruity, tannic monster in its youth, to still have such a high concentration of fruit and tannin. My first bottle from this lot (all the bottles had the same slip label), was thin and dried out. Just serves to remind what a gamble old bottles are. Just like a slot machine that you keep pumping coins into, hope springs anew with every pull of the cork…. I guess you’ve got to take your jackpots where you find them. This was a jackpot. 12.5% ABV (great; superior/****/18/95) (856 views)
Tasted by The Wine Monkeys on 12/16/2023 & rated 91 points: Pnp- Very nice nose of leather, mushroom, ox blood and forest floor. Wonderful balance and integration. Long finish. Showed a touch better to my liking than the 2000 Haut Bailly enjoyed in parallel. (712 views)
Tasted by Amberissey on 12/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Blackcurrant, tobacco, pencil lead, and campfire smoke all feature on the divine nose. Amazingly transferred to the palette with a wonderful velvet mouthfeel. Fresh and balanced. Spectacular at nearly 25 years old. I wish I had a case as there is absolutely no rush, great structure. Great recommendation at House of Townend. (712 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 10/5/2023 & rated 84 points: First of three bought during a cellar sale, with a fill well into the neck and a perfect capsule. Cork soaked three quarters of the way up. Excellent color with very little bricking. Indistinct red and black fruit, some generic tertiary things, and no tannin to speak of. Thoroughly drinkable but clearly drying out. Not much joy here. 12.5% ABV (good (barely)/** (just)/13.5/84) (543 views)
Tasted by timbo9313 on 8/11/2023 & rated 91 points: OWC of 12 bottles from UK about 5 years ago. Served with Cantonese steam seafood and roast chicken. Level and capsule were good. Cork soaked up to half way but came out intact. Decanter for 10 mins. Residual was moderate. Nose was average and color was matured magenta. Cassie was medium with integrated tannin. Hint of pencil shaving , spice, mineral and cigar box. Palate is fainting fast and sure it already reached the peak. Drink now if you still have them. It's my last bottle. Very good quality for money. 90+ (1188 views)
Tasted by Coastalnative on 8/2/2023 & rated 95 points: Absolutely and utterly phenomenal. This bottle was perfectly stored. Cork came out fully intact and with great ease. Deep crimson color. Showing a beautiful array of both black and red fruits, subtle graphite and tarry phenolics. A touch of dried herbs as well. Still tannins present but they have considerably softened. This was just a real winner all around. I did not have high hopes but this particular bottle ranks among many more expensive 1989s that I have tried in recent memory. (1167 views)
Tasted by mowtod on 5/25/2023 & rated 83 points: Still good character but thin compared to 89 Cantemerle (1438 views)
Tasted by mowtod on 2/12/2023 & rated 88 points: Good but thinning . Drink now . (1593 views)
Tasted by Quinn05 on 1/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Keller & Haart tasting (Concept Riesling, Düsseldorf, Germany): Decanted for sediment.
Very classic Bordeaux. Still plenty of fruit left, very youthful and fresh. Big, but smooth tannins. In a great spot right now, but no need to hurry. (1958 views)
Tasted by gschniepp on 12/16/2022 & rated 90 points: Opened the 1.5L and gave it an hour to breathe. Soft tannins, nice fruit still, cigar box. Drink now. (1187 views)
Tasted by Rockland on 11/24/2022 & rated 91 points: Smooth tannins, dark fruit, graphite, cigar box, a very generous wine for its age. Brick-rimmed, otherwise still very impenetrable color. Shared the table beautifully with braised oxtail. (1434 views)
Tasted by Dave Canada on 11/24/2022 & rated 92 points: Quintessential aged Bordeaux....in a fantastic place. Great to drink now but no need to rush. (1429 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 11/11/2022 & rated 92 points: At first popped and poured. At that point it was a bit hard and metallic. So then decanted for several hours. Really amazingly youthful looking. You’d never guess this wine is over 20 years old. in fact, I wouldn’t have been surprised if someone told me, this was only several years old, judging from color alone. Lovely nose on this now. Fragrant, floral, lead pencil, and cedar. In the mouth, a bit dry on the finish, but otherwise quite decent. very feminine style. I’m not sure I’d let this go for too many more years, but right now it is still tasting pretty damn good. Probably just a tad past its peak. 5-13-16-8: 92/100. (1245 views)
Tasted by Brucie69 on 10/14/2022 & rated 93 points: Wow this is much better than I expected given the label.

A lovely vibrant nose of leather, earth and red fruits. To taste the tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, cedar and earth underpin a still vibrant red and black fruit mid palate and then lovely bracing acidity and balanced tannins.

A gorgeous mature Bordeaux that over delivers given its modest appellation. Of course with a wine this age YMMV and it’s a bit of a crap shoot unless you’ve cellared yourself, but if you find a bottle with a good fill and decent provenance it’s worth a pint as it’s still going strong. (1287 views)
Tasted by g-man on 10/9/2022 & rated 89 points: My note mirrors the last couple posted here. Sound bottle with a beautiful nose but it has lost its' punch. Tannins are completely resolved with mellow palate of dried flowers and underbrush. My last bottle and glad I opened it while it is still enjoyable. (1321 views)
Tasted by vinolovers on 10/8/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted as the cork crumbled. Still a nice dark coloring with no bricking on the rim. A nose primarily of dark fruit (blackberry, plum cassis0 followed by mature flavors of leather, graphite and tobacco. Well knit with no tannins apparent; very smooth; (last bottle). (951 views)
Tasted by WinoRick on 10/1/2022 & rated 88 points: Straight forward Bordeaux, medium to light bodied, with fading fruit. I last tasted this in 2015 and said drink up then. I didn't heed my own advice, but only paid $17 upon release... for what was then called, "The vintage of the centruy!" (1083 views)
Tasted by lomartin@protonmail.com on 9/7/2022 & rated 88 points: Drinking well despite being past the drinking range on paper. Still solid and has more years to go, but I don’t think it will improve further. Feel like it is at or near its plateau. Leather, oak, earth, with residual dark berries that bring an unexpected freshness to the wine despite its 33 years. (1107 views)
Tasted by Coastalnative on 8/29/2022 & rated 94 points: Drinking exceptionally well (in fact it was better than an 86 Mouton we had the next day).... Perfectly aged and still has life left. Deep red color. Soily' aromatics with some dark cherry, cassis, and dusty plum on the nose. Light tobacco and damp earth give it away as nothing other than Bordeaux. Subtle and elegant but still has some girth and power and the same time.

Totally BORDEAUX and a real beauty at 33 years old. (note: This wine was perfectly stored, the cork looked like it came out of a 5 year old wine) (1120 views)
Tasted by red_man on 8/20/2022 & rated 91 points: level lower neck, good long cork, 2+hours decanting, black-red with only slight brown rim, still remarkably youthful, lovely fine, rich, warm, complex nose with only the very slightest hint of the green Moulis character, palate rich, smooth, great depth, balance and length, very persistent lovely aftertaste, a really great Chasse-Spleen at its peak but no rush - except that it is lovely now! (971 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 4/17/2022 flawed bottle: Dead, undrinkable. More leaky junk from Winebid. (1482 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.
