Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cofidis2 on 6/4/2023 & rated 88 points: from 375ml bottle that I bought in 2006 for $22, per my records. Color is medium ruby and indicates in a period to consume. Has a nose reminiscent of some 1980's VP's, woody, licorice but not TCA. While the palate has still has some tannins, the fruit is fully matured and into its secondary phases now. Light complexity and ready to drink, at least from 1/2 bottle.
88 Points (677 views)
Tasted by FransS on 3/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Winefield's pre-sale tasting: Lovely mint and dark fruit, a very modest sweetness, persistent in the midtaste, not firm, but elegant; I like the dry Fonseca style. (801 views)
Tasted by JerM on 7/3/2022: (cellardoor w ZM, DY) Savoury nose, compote and leather. Fermenting cocoa. Sour cherries, white pepper. Crusty dry earth, wood spices, high acid clean finish. Prunes. Burnt raisin, complex, atypical . (412 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 5/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Deep dark center, dark red rim with modest signs of age.
Sweet blackberry liquor, black cherries, a little earthy, some alcohol.
Smooth, blackberries and blackcurrants, sweet, intense, good acidity, modest tannins, great finish.
Excellent Fonseca, a wonderful contrast from the first 2 bottles, intense blackberry fruit, great balance, good now. Fingers crossed for the last bottle. (2117 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 1/31/2021 & rated 89 points: Deep red center, red rim with signs of age.
Sweet, over ripe blackberries, blueberries, warm stones.
Smooth, milk chocolate, iron, blueberries, alcohol, good acidity, rancio, leafy, creme du mure finish.
Much better than previous bottle, only concern is a lack of richness (and a quite dry presentation overall). Drinking well now. (2304 views)
Tasted by Wiveka on 12/26/2020: Very ssmoth and soft textures and aromas of raisins, prunes and figs and hints of vanilla, chocolate and caramel.
The palate displays fruit concentrations, good acidity and long length. (2084 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 12/25/2020 & rated 86 points: Deep red center, red rim with some signs of age.
Chocolate, burned sugar, stewed prunes, iron, ripe berries.
Smooth and sweet, white chocolate, touch of green, ripe plums, some blueberries, good length if a little dirty.
Okay port. Taste is better than the nose. Worry about the history. Just noticed that the bottles have a 15 cent Maine redemption sticker. How did these bottles get to California? (1818 views)
Tasted by Crispin on 4/19/2019 & rated 90 points: Just amazing. (3296 views)
Tasted by Lyubomir Lefterov on 12/31/2018 & rated 92 points: A lot of sediment when decanted, this was showing good balance. Evolved in a nice way, vivid and energetic, showing mostly tertiary aromas with good definition and focus. A decently priced aged vintage port that is definitely a 'buy again'. (2504 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/4/2018 & rated 91 points: Tasted after 1999 Fonseca Quinta do Panascal. Again dried fruit, nuts, spices, leather on the nose. A little less intense and blunt, more elegant, with good freshness and finesse. Fine length. 90-92 (2644 views)
Tasted by Alexroy on 12/10/2017 & rated 89 points: Deep purple fruit, develops and softens in mouth, Long. (3670 views)
Tasted by danckie on 10/9/2017 & rated 91 points: Enjoyable stuff. Nicely mayured. Dark fruit, prunes, coffee and chocolate. Thick and jammy. No heat. Much better then al half bottle I tried earlier (3812 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 7/28/2017 & rated 87 points: Nothing particularly impressive today. This doesn't feel like it's holding a lot back and, though the dark fruit and fruitcake notes are appealing, the alcohol pokes out a bit too much and there's a dearth of complexity. (1933 views)
Tasted by Ombibulous on 11/21/2016: Found this last summer for only $46 (full bottle). We drank it to celebrate my birthday. Quite a find for that price! (3800 views)
Tasted by Crispin on 8/8/2016 & rated 92 points: Just stunning. (3923 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 2/21/2016: spicy nose, lots of fruit and some leather
Rich and round, dark fruit and some great spicy perfume
Really showing well
One of the nicest Guimaraens I've had
VIntage quality for a good price. Around £27 (4517 views)
Tasted by Alexroy on 2/14/2016 & rated 91 points: Mint, prunes, figs, bright fruit, depth without heaviness, alcohol nicely balanced. Lovely. (3646 views)
Tasted by Lilja on 10/29/2015 & rated 90 points: Classic mature vintage port nose with lots of dried fruit, figs, prunes and raisins together with the usual sticky alcohol. A nice touch of candied orange peel and a bit of leather gives it a bit of depth. Sweet on the palate with good acidity and structure. Good intensity and length.

Nothing outstanding, but very good for €30 (340kr) and worked splendidly with the chocolate. (4136 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 2/14/2015: fragrant nose, touch of raisins
some tannin still here
nicely balanced, elegant with some length
very nice if not hugely intense (3131 views)
Tasted by PMDias on 1/17/2015 & rated 90 points: Blackberries, chocolate, notes of mocha. Quite a bit better than some Port I've spent a good deal more on, but, still, relatively simple. Good bargain, though. (3038 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 7/30/2014 & rated 90 points: A business dinner (Hilversum): Rich and figgy style, cloves, ripe cherry fruit, balanced well by a firm tannic structure and ripe acidity. Still youthful and drinking well right now but certainly has another 10-15 years in it. (3373 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 8/12/2013 & rated 88 points: From half-bottle, no decant. On the nose, strawberry, camphor, and lemon; on the palate, strawberry, clove, fig, candied cherries, and citrus. This is still a baby, but it is drinkable now. I expect it will improve with more time. A nice match with olive oil-flavored ice cream and dark chocolate. (3599 views)
Tasted by tomandlu on 3/10/2009 flawed bottle: Cork in good shape visually but the wine tasted off. Light-ish color, insipid taste. (4662 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 1/5/2007 & rated 90 points: A private dinner (Restaurant De Lindenhof **, Giethoorn, Netherlands): Closed but deep, figs, cloves, blackcurrants, eucalyptus, powerful, good tannic structure and length; does not match a Fonseca VP, but trounces many fully declared VP's. Port Blend

Over a hundred varieties of grapes (castas) are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.
- Mayson (1999), Port and the Douro, p. 93

Guimaraens Vintage

In years when Fonseca does not ‘declare’ a classic vintage, it selects the finest grapes from its own vineyards to yield a small quantity of this superb wine, which is produced exactly as a declared Fonseca Vintage. Beautifully structured and perfectly balanced, Guimaraens Vintage Ports show Fonseca’s superb marriage of power and breed in a slightly lighter, earlier-maturing style.
