Tasted by AD_jutant on 5/4/2024 & rated 91 points: So exciting!
Smells of petrol, apricot jam, elderflower, and chamomile. Cake icing. Fern, fallen leaves, a little pine resin, maybe pine honey? It’s opening up with time and moves towards those piney notes, very interesting.
This is a rare kind of wine that I enjoy in the palate more than on the nose. There is medium+ acidity that lifts the wine a little but it’s still viscous and very sweet. It’s honey, jam, rendered butter, elderflower and chamomile again. All these notes are much more expressive than on the nose and they come one after another within each individual sip, which I absolutely love! Petrol and honey notes also come in here. Some sunflower seeds, Lenin hard candy or cough drops.
Pretty long and interesting finish.

Tasted by Vino Me on 3/4/2024 & rated 88 points: Paired with a creme brulee that my wife made. This was not as fruity as previous bottles and centered more on tea notes. Only mildly sweet but I would characterize it more on the dry side. The worst showing for this wine so far. Drnk now. 88 points. (800 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 2/4/2024 & rated 93 points: During a GE/AUT tasting, encore wine. From 0.375. The 2001 vintage shines through, there is excellent freshness here intermixed with the generous apricot, quince and honey aromas. Youthful even, after almost 25 years. 93+ (1186 views)
Tasted by BVal on 12/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Last noted 5/16 from 375ml & suggested waiting 7 years. So here we are, 7 years later and from a 750ml.

Color/App: moderately deep gold with high viscosity. Lovely spiced-peach dominant nose with notes of clove and vanilla, mandarin orange, apricots, caramel and botrytis aplenty. Fresh, appealing mouthfeel; acidity could be slightly higher but there's still a good amount and there's a long sweet finish to this. Palate shows caramel covered peaches and apricots, baking spices and a good shot of orange peel with a small hit of pithy bitters that is quite nice. This shows sweet and long and fairly well-balanced at 22 years old. GTG now and 10+ years more I'd say. (886 views)
Tasted by Léognan on 12/7/2023 & rated 95 points: For years this wine keeps constantly its fine quality with a convincing balance of sweetness (caramelised pears, abricots and a nuance of Christmas spice) and acidity. Perfect out of 0.375 bottle. Wonderful nectar! (1087 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 11/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Fabulous bottle with sweet apple nectar fruit, botrytis notes and great acidity and long finish (994 views)
Tasted by jonboy74 on 8/20/2023 & rated 93 points: From 750ml. Fresh as a daisy, beat out a 2011 suduiraut. A long way to go yet. Lovely lifting acidity and moderate viscosity. Sad to see my last bottle go but wow was it impressive (1207 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 2/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Just great. Golden color, nice botrytis, still seems young. (1832 views)
Tasted by Gregmonroe on 2/4/2023: JD Friday Wine Group - ED host (City Club, FW): Served blind - dark amber/deep gold in the glass, with a nose of sweet apricot and caramel. The sweetness on the palate was not overpowering, it was well integrated. A thick, oily, viscous wine, that was served with the second course and paired well. I guessed a 30 year old sauternes, so I was relatively close, just 10 years off... (1764 views)
Tasted by TahoeSki on 1/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Crème brûlée and caramel on the nose. Agree with simple and short finish comments, although longer with some air and as it warmed up from fridge. (1701 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/16/2022 & rated 93 points: A Little Bit of France at Spoon (Spoon & Stable, Mpls, MN): Deep gold color. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes, Orange cream, sweet cream, ripe peach, cardamom, spice on luscious nose. The palate is strongly spiced, apricot and orange, bold, vanilla, orange marmalade, honey, full bodied, good acid carries this nicely matured Sauternes with some bitters on the finish. Nice, and quite consistent. (1934 views)
Tasted by minndavid60 on 11/16/2022 & rated 93 points: Peaches, apricots, peach pit, apricot pit and minerals on a full, round frame. Terrific botrytis. Still present acidity although a bit less than what I would ideally like to see One glass was left after our dinner at Spoon and Stanle that I vacu-vined and finished 2 nights later. One left. (1611 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 10/29/2022 & rated 92 points: At least the 7th time I have had this wine. Notes of apricot, white tea and peaches. Spicy finish. Still drinking very well. 92 points. (1285 views)
Tasted by Lord Rodney on 10/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Excellent wine here ! Incredibly fresh for its age and definitely the most fresh 2001 I have had at this stage - wow sweet and elegant fruit bravo (1274 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 8/13/2022 & rated 95 points: Very pleasant surprise. Out of 375ml. In a perfect early drinking window for me. No ox, but beautiful tropical fruit. Sugar just starting to subside but great fruit left. (1353 views)
Tasted by jonboy74 on 7/15/2022 & rated 91 points: In a nice spot. Not much more to add from AAGRAWAL's TN. Mine was a 750ml and I think it has the bones to go awhile yet. Going to leave my last bottle alone for 10+ years (1583 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 7/1/2022 & rated 90 points: Fabulous light golden color, lighter than a 2001 Rieussec tasted just days ago; high intensity aromatics, elegant spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel, honey; palate is medium bodied, balanced, 13.5% alcohol, medium-plus acidity, sweet but balanced with elegance, orange zest and orange marmalade, a bit of bitter peel or pith as it transitions to a medium length, clean, elegant finish. This is showing well today, with a lovely balance between sweetness and elegance, fruit and spice. I think at early peak, though I'm sure another few years won't change this wine substantially. Sure, doesn't compete with the top 2001s in complexity, but a lovely sauternes for the price and quality. 90-91 (1577 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 3/17/2022 & rated 88 points: Chris’s 1st Growth Series — Haut Brion (La Trompette, London): Deep amber. Really burnished. Half expect to see an insect or two trapped within. Slightly burnt sugar. A touch of vanilla. Slightly medicinal botrytis. Evolved. Rich and intense at the expense of elegance. *** (2116 views)
Tasted by tcosgriff on 12/25/2021 & rated 91 points: Similar to the first bottle drunk 3 years before at Christmas. Golden color with a bouquet and flavor dominated by botrytis, honey, and dried fruit. Very pleasant, but lacks the complexity needed for a great wine. (1500 views)
Tasted by Léognan on 12/25/2021 & rated 95 points: Château Doisy-Védrines Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes 13.5°
Demie Bouteille (0.375)

Farbe: wunderschönes, sattes Gelb, nach Bernstein changierende.
Kork: Wie neu, kaum Zucker
Abgang: minutenlang nachhallend. Die sublimiert liquide Frucht von 20 Jahren.
Großartiger Sauternes-Jahrgang, zu Recht hoch gelobt

Tasted by RPHC on 12/25/2021 & rated 94 points: Amazing color transformation over the holding period; now a gorgeous medium amber. Large clump of crystallized sediment along with some smaller dark grains. On the nose: a heavy perfume of raisins, honeysuckle and other florals. There were woody scents folded in over time. Aromas were complex and evolved quite a bit over the first hour. White raisins, honey, pears and caramelized apple on the palate in a lush, syrupy presentation along with a long, lingering finish but at a mild intensity. Past the 2 hour mark and some of the aromatic complexity began to wane, but the sweetness seemed to intensify towards the caramelized side. (1495 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 11/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Opened on Thanksgiving. No formal notes. 92 points. (1925 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 7/15/2021 & rated 92 points: Nose: 91; Palate: 93 (2072 views)
Tasted by cypra on 1/1/2021 & rated 89 points: Dark yellow to brown. Caramel and herbs in the nose, lacking freshness. Immense sweetness in the palate no acid and freshness. Medium finish. I do not expect improvement with further cellaring. (2338 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 12/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Delicious, deep, golden and loaded with botrytis. Heavy with just enough balancing acid on the finish. Very pure and maybe lacking a bit of complexity. Still very fine and correct if not a passionate wine. No hurry but no reason to wait. (91) (2212 views)

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
