Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 17 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by penguinoid on 6/18/2023: Colour: intense ruby heading towards garnet
Nose: medium intensity, tertiary, developed. Blackberry, blackcurrant jam, black cherry. Strawberry jam? Raisins, dried figs. Cedar, nutmeg, cocoa. Tobacco, leather, dried hay, and maybe earth. High alcohol quite noticeable.
Palate: sweet, medium tannins, medium(+) acidity, high alcohol (20,5%), full bodied. Medium(+) intensity, long finish. Blackberry, blackcurrant jam, black cherry. Strawberry jam? Raisins, dried figs. Cedar, nutmeg, cocoa. Tobacco, leather, dried hay, and maybe earth. Some pungency from alcohol, but less than on the nose.
Conclusions: very good. Quite smooth on the palate, and drinking very nicely. Can drink now, but suited for further ageing (not sure how long though - maybe just another 5 or 10 years???). LOTS of sediment in the bottle.
Seal: natural cork.

Tasted by Zweder on 2/17/2022 & rated 91 points: Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club" 2022-1; Vintage Port (@ RvD by PvL): Soft and ripe bouquet with plums and raisins. On the palate chocolate, sweet spices, full bodied and round with good acidity, but also a bit alcoholic in the finish. 90 - 91 (1343 views)
Tasted by Krister Larsson on 12/28/2021 & rated 92 points: gav t Marianne, Mikael, Jonas o Dean som julklapp (1122 views)
Tasted by Sebastian80 on 12/26/2021 & rated 94 points: Some fruit left but this is mostly tertiary now. Not complete harmony but very good and interesting for the price. Don’t think it will improve further. Less sweetness now and a prefer enjoying it on its own. (804 views)
Tasted by Vera Wind on 12/19/2021 & rated 89 points: Colour ruby red.
On the nose warm spices; cinnamon, muscot. Almond pastry. Sweet and earthy.
On the palate sweet and spicy; very nice and promising.
However some fiery alcohol heat remains, that hampers the overall impression.
I'll let this lie for quite a while. (639 views)
Tasted by ronnieroots on 6/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Very dark colour still, although some bricking is noticeable. Beautifully balanced nose, packed with floral and flinty aromas, together with dark fruit, spice and some tobacco / leather. Mid-weight on the palate, giving much the same flavours as on the nose. Quite tight still and slightly spirity / fiery finish. This is just getting started, masses of upward potential. (2002 views)

Port Blend

Over a hundred varieties of grapes (castas) are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.
- Mayson (1999), Port and the Douro, p. 93

Guimaraens Vintage

In years when Fonseca does not ‘declare’ a classic vintage, it selects the finest grapes from its own vineyards to yield a small quantity of this superb wine, which is produced exactly as a declared Fonseca Vintage. Beautifully structured and perfectly balanced, Guimaraens Vintage Ports show Fonseca’s superb marriage of power and breed in a slightly lighter, earlier-maturing style.
