Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 192 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SLB83 on 3/3/2024 & rated 93 points: A lovely VP, but an absolute nightmare to get the cork out. The screw went in easily, but it came apart then I pulled it up. I’ve got a great two-stage corkscrew, but the cork just ripped. It had somehow fused itself against the bottle in one area. I had to peel the left over bit out with a crab leg picker.
I poured it into a decanter through a filter. There was some sediment (and cork gristle of course!).

The colour has started to fade on this one, with some dark brick red on the edges.

I then poured a sip-sized amount into a glass. On the nose some prunes and some stewed black fruit.
On the palate an absolute prune fest. Sweet prunes, nothing else, except a little bit of hotness from the alcohol.
After 3 or 4 hours the cherries started to arrive, and the wine was much more open. Also some floral notes on the nose. The hotness had gone.

Eventually, after 5 hours, I poured it back into the bottle.
We had it after dinner, probably 10 hours after opening the bottle.

The wine was much better than when I initially opened it, and had a wide variety of fruit notes, some light oak and some chocolate.

We had it with Stilton, some dark chocolate, pecan and walnuts, and cheddar. Unsurprisingly, a great paring.

I was expecting more tannins in the wine, and was surprised by how accessible it was. I had the Taylor’s 2009 recently, and that was much darker, both in colour and flavours. The tannins were much more pronounced.

This Fonseca will last for years though, and if you have a few bottles (I have 5 left), give it a go soon, and see in 5 years how it has developed. (2733 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 1/14/2024: I've had this bottle from release, and it was the last of a 3-bottle purchase.

No problems pulling the cork with an ah-so. Cork was on the spongy side but no signs of stains on the side. Decanted for sediment, and there was a lot of it. Left open in the decanter for a couple of hours before re-bottling and bringing it to a friend's house.

Color had a deep maroon color with a little browning at the edges of the glass. Nose was fantastic that reminded me of Luxardo cherries, baking spices, black currant jam. Not spirity on the nose as I sometimes experienced with young port. The aromas carried over to the palate on a silky palate. A surprising bonus was how it paired very well with a bacon-butternut squash risotto.

Definitely seek more port in the future and do this pairing again. (3736 views)
Tasted by scottesterly on 12/31/2023 & rated 94 points: Cherry explosion! I have three more bottles - can’t wait to see where this is at in a decade. (3080 views)
Tasted by Araldinho on 12/29/2023 & rated 91 points: Deep brick red.
Aromas of boysenberry, licorice, tobacco, cloves, geranium and rosemary.
Sweet but not over-sweet.
Grained chewy tannins. Blackberry acids and walnut bitterness.
Palate of cassis, blueberry, aniseed, espresso and cardamon.
A rather young and muscular port with red wine attributes and elegant spices. Keep for 10+ years. Tasted 2023. Tasted alongside Graham 1985. The matched wine displayed greater complexity, while the present wine has power and a stunning structure. (3048 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 12/28/2023 & rated 90 points: 1970-2000 Fonseca Vintage Ports Vertical (Palo Alto, California): Nose: 90; Palate: 90
My #8; Group's #9; Tasted blind (3333 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/25/2023 & rated 96 points: Still a baby, certainly. Came directly fromthe (very trusted) impoprted, but the corked was quite dry. The wine was not. Much too youijg, but intense clean, manly, vertical, a worthy vintage-port from a great year; and much too easy too enjoy allready at this young age.

Tasted by J'agnes on 12/23/2023 & rated 91 points: Clean cork. Definite ruby and quiet on the nose. Rich palate with minimal alcohol burn. It’s ready but plenty of years on the clock. A delight. (1930 views)
Tasted by trumpet60201 on 12/15/2023 flawed bottle: Corked. (2371 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 11/28/2023: From 750, decanted to remove from sediment, then rinsed and put back in bottle. Drank over three days. Deep ruby in the glass, med + aroma intensity, aromas of coffee, tar, leather, balck cherry, black raspberry, cocoa, dried black fruits, dried flowers, endless- moving to strawberry and softer, red and black fruits by day three. The wine seems immortal. Palate confirms, sweet wine, full body, med + acid, med + tannin, the wine is intense on the palate with a long finish. Tannins are earthy, alcohol is high, but very well hidden. Palate has some youthful, fruity (matching the nose) elements that really doesn't convey 23yrs old- Outstanding wine, suitable for drinking now, but has a long life ahead of it. (2913 views)
Tasted by trumpet60201 on 10/20/2023 & rated 95 points: This is an outstanding and elegant port. It has incredible balance, despite the fortification. It's still loaded with beautiful fresh sweet fruit, has nice acidity, and the tannins are very mild at this point. It has great concentration and a long finish. Drank from a 375 at cellar temp without decanting. (3215 views)
Tasted by melzar on 7/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Probably deserves a better score, but Port is just not my wine. I find the sweetness of most desert wines cloying. This is a well made wine. Port lovers should take this score with a grain of salt! (4132 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 7/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Prior bottle was a year ago and this wine remains in a very good spot. Heavy black cherry along with dark plum as well as leather and earth notes on the nose. Nearly full bodied with a mix of very dark black cherry and very deep plum, brightened by blackberry. There's very good depth here, especially through the middle. The alcohol, tannins and spices notes were much more in balance with this bottle than the prior one. The wine overall felt more integrated, but I think that was a question of positive bottle variation and being open for two hours ahead of time, rather than the wine evolving that much over just a year. I plan to open my next bottle in June/July 2024. (3742 views)
Tasted by Motz on 6/11/2023 & rated 96 points: Fonseca, Vila Nova de Gaia: Highly sensuous perfume of dried flower petals, raspberry potpourri, carob, coco powder, exotic spice, incense, pipe tobacco, wintergreen, and distinctive terroir.

Plush, imminently nuanced, inflection-changing. The wine features medium plus acid, and ethereally powdery medium to medium plus tannins. Knee-weakening textures, generous finish.

Spectacular...while also overshadowed by the 1985, with which it shared much in common. Improvement, after seven to ten years, seems likely. Drink by 2040 or so. (4858 views)
Tasted by JurgenVin on 5/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Heavy weight, dark purple. Rich full candied, blackberry, plum, raisin, that savors on the tongue. Smooth with excellent complexity. I sipped it in small glasses for four days. Definitely a desert wine, drank it straight and also with some cheese and crackers. Had some trouble with the cork, but used a strainer to remove small pieces of cork from the port. Drinking well now, but will last another 20 years. Yummy. (4255 views)
Tasted by jwolf99 on 4/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Consumed to celebrate oldest son's 23rd birthday; Filtered and then decanted for 10 hours, which helped immensely to blow off the alcohol that that present when initially pouring into the decanter; drank over 2 hours; an outright plum bomb - I mean LOTS of plum with sweet black cherries and tobacco; moderate length finish (less than usual for a vintage port) with notes of coffee, bitter-sweet chocolate and currants; super smooth mouthfeel with little tannins and alcohol to detract from the port itself; very enjoyable but Taylor and Dow from this vintage were definitely better consumed for same occasion in the prior 2 years (4288 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 3/12/2023: Cork was a complete disaster to remove, even with a Durand. Eventually decanted through a filter, cleaned out the bottle and put it back in after a few hours. First glass was about four hours after opening, and that was still way too soon. Only twenty four hours later did it finally start to give up the goods, as the dark curtain peeled back to reveal a buffet of black raspberries, dark chocolate and cherry liqueur. Still quite tannic, and with no shortage to the depth of flavor, this seems to need another ten years minimum to even approach some degree of maturity, and that’s from half bottle! (4630 views)
Tasted by Helmut Wraak on 12/24/2022 & rated 91 points: This year's Xmas Port. I have to say I prefer both Taylors and Grahams compared to this Fonseca. (4319 views)
Tasted by canan on 11/26/2022 & rated 94 points: Christmas BYO (Michaels House): Not served cold enough which caused a lower score than normal as the alcohol was disturbing the flavors. (5001 views)
Tasted by chatters on 11/5/2022: Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London): Still showing quite youthful plums, herbaceous notes, brambles and sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, slightly grainy texture, black fruits, slight alcohol warmth. Another one of those "why don't I drink more of this" moments… (4762 views)
Tasted by D_RICH on 11/5/2022 & rated 92 points: Dry/crumbled cork. 2-3 hour decant, filtered out sediment, back into bottle, stored open for a couple of hours prior to consumption. Very smooth. crowd friendly Port that was enjoyed by all. Very much ready to go now, with years left. ADDENDUM: Day 2, leftover sample from the decant; intensely concentrated, complex and delicious. (92-93). (4180 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 7/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Black and red cherry, blackberry, tar and spice notes on the nose. Between medium and full bodied (20.5% ABV) and needs about 90 minutes open (at least) to show it's best. On initial opening, the alcohol, especially towards the back was dominant. But with time, it came together quite well, showing masses of black cherry, black raspberry and blackberry. As it starts to get going, the fruit complexity really shines through while the wine overall maintains impressive depth. The alcohol, tannins and other structural notes, while distracting when first opened, come into better and better balance with the fruit depth with time. This still has many, many years ahead of it and still hold potential for future improvement. I'll almost certainly be buying more. (5240 views)
Tasted by JerM on 7/3/2022: (cellardoor w ZM, DY) Savoury leathers, soft mossy forest floor. Fresh, juicy, white and black pepper, freshly cracked. Rose and violets. Elegant focus and nicely structured. Fresh and focused. (1088 views)
Tasted by FiggySmalls on 5/4/2022: delicious and well made, but definitely shows harsh alcohol on pnp= ouch! it burns your nose/palate and destroys everything else.

it's quite open and well developed, though.

TRUST the previous notes and open this a night or two before drinking.

day two=alcohol intrusion is 85% gone. delicious

vibrant/far from tiring. developed/soft on the palate, but with youthful fruit. low acid and not a powerhouse. all boxes are checked=thumbs up (5656 views)
Tasted by canan on 3/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Fonseca VP Vertical: Incredibly young with compact and very dark fruit. High acidity and tannins but also a touch of alcohol.
Very long and acidic aftertaste and overall, truly a magical wine. It does seem to have opened up but not with a lot of evolution in its fruit core.
Absolutely stunning wine! (5943 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 1/16/2022 & rated 92 points: The nose on the ‘00 is beautiful, showing a kinship to the ‘85 in terms of its blueberry jam and violet notes. This is spirity in a way that the ‘85 isn’t and I’m not sure if that will correct course down the road. (7425 views)
