Tasted by Labrador on 12/2/2022 & rated 91 points: I do enjoy the wines from O'Shaughnessy, and this bottle was no exception.
No formal notes, but everyone enjoyed this wine (977 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 10/28/2022 & rated 94 points: This was a stunning bottle of O'Shaughnessy - dark mountain fruit, lovely aroma, rich, teeth-stainingly good, balanced, clean, powerful yet elegant, smooth on the palate and with a long finish that invites you back for more.
I would venture to say that this wine is at its peak.
This is what you get when you are patient with big CA wines. Oh, what a reward.
Three cheers for O'Shaughnessy. (989 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 10/21/2022 & rated 96 points: Pure mountain fruit. Well balanced and fresh. Kudos. (1030 views)
Tasted by capacious on 5/24/2022 & rated 82 points: Maybe Brett, maybe held too long altho that shouldn’t be, but first from this vineyard where we poured out the contents. Very sad, and atypical. (1253 views)
Tasted by brucerob on 6/12/2020 & rated 95 points: Beautiful Napa mountain fruit in it's prime - great balance and minerality. At 16 years old still spry, tannins resolved and plenty of fruit and acidity. I believe this is at it's peak and will be drinking well for the next 3 to 5 years. For CA cabs it does not get much better than this! Drink or hold (2451 views)
Tasted by Haroldz7 on 4/6/2019 & rated 94 points: Classic Howell Mountain!!! Beautiful, rich with flavors of red and black fruit and black currant. Also, medium body and medium to long finish. Aging gracefully. Still fresh and yet benefiting from age. Great wine!!!! (2327 views)
Tasted by jcampano on 11/28/2018 & rated 94 points: Drank bottle 51 of 60. Decanted for an hour, this effort from Sean Capiaux was hitting on all cylinders. Floral and mineral aromatics, followed by bold yet smooth black and blue fruit with a touch of oak. Not sure how much longer the cork would have held out, so “drink’em if you got’em”! A great Howell Mountain cab! (2597 views)
Tasted by rwstorer on 9/3/2018: DRANK FOR BIRTHDAY (2585 views)
Tasted by mattb76 on 5/12/2018: Drank with dinner - grilled steak on the egg. Drinking great for ages Cali Cabernet. Nicely integrated... (2752 views)
Tasted by vpoms on 7/21/2017 & rated 91 points: I bought 6 bottles if this wine in April of 2008. I had the first bottle in September of 2008 and the second one in November of 20013. Today I opened the third bottle of this wine. This wine has deep intense almost purple color with a clearly visible ruby rim. On the nose it has clean, medium plus intensity of dark fruit with definite undertones of vanilla and oak as well. The wine is dry on the palate with definite medium acidity and well integrated and well balanced tannins. Its has medium plus body with definitive flavors of black cherry and licorice on the palate. The finish is pleasant and long, with no excessive alcohol sensations. Since 2008 I tasted a lot of great wines, good wines and mediocre wines, I rate this wine a "91" but, I feel that I can justify my score a lot better than I was able to in 2008. This wine has good balance, good length and intensity, where its is lacking is complexity, and I would not expect much more complexity in this price range. I think that this is one of the better Napa Valley Cabernets in this price range (under $100). Cheers!!! (3156 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 5/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Really develops body and comes together after about 2 hours. Notes of red fruit mixed in. Pretty lively as the nice tannins and acidity combine for a long finish. Not as complex as I hoped but very nice wine. (2819 views)
Tasted by Knicksfan on 8/27/2016 & rated 91 points: From magnum; Nice balance of fruit and tannin. In a good place now. (3289 views)
Tasted by capacious on 11/28/2015 & rated 92 points: always been a fan of Betty and her very well made wines. A classic napa, this is a big big wine, but well evolved at this time, integrated, lengthy, chocolate, dark red fruit, good feel on the palate. (4107 views)
Tasted by capacious on 7/3/2015 & rated 90 points: PNP Starts off a bit closed off, slightly bitter, chewy, sense of pipe tobacco, finish a bit shorter than I recall. Good feel in the mouth, be back tomorrow with the follow up. I think there's better in there. Suffers a bit following a 2003 pichon. (4271 views)
Tasted by ekenneth on 2/6/2015 & rated 93 points: Drank on superbowl Sunday. Lush, rich but not overly made Cab from Howell Mountain. Nice. (3342 views)
Tasted by capacious on 12/24/2014 & rated 92 points: A very well built wine, beginning a good time, ready to drink but with years to go, complex, well integrated, very clearly new world (3570 views)
Tasted by capacious on 11/20/2014 & rated 92 points: Excellent Napa. Early in its best time. Well integrated fruit and tannin, with great feel start to finish, lengthy finish, a pause in the discussion wine with our guests picking up bottle to ask " what's this one?" Had the privilege to meet the proprietors at a Red Carpet Wine dinner a decade ago. I wish them - and us- decades more of such wonderful wines from Betty and team. (3224 views)
Tasted by brucerob on 11/3/2014 & rated 92 points: Did a 2001 - 2008 Vertical of this wine. 2004 drinking beautifully - soft tannins and just delicious - softer than other vintages. Second day was good, +1 point. (2240 views)
Tasted by H Crenshaw on 8/24/2014 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 3 hours. Big bold mountain flavors with nice minerality on the mid palate. Really enjoyed this wine. (1874 views)
Tasted by Knicksfan on 7/29/2014 & rated 92 points: From magnum; P&P - still delightful with lots of fruit and soft tannin backbone. (1883 views)
Tasted by WinePlanner on 7/20/2014 & rated 92 points: Wonderful-- with a full body and blackberry, tar/graphite, black currant. A long, long finish with slight cherry flavor. Opened w/o breathing time. (1985 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 7/17/2014: no notes, NR, drank at Ted's in HB after a surf session so a little distracted… good fruit still with some secondary, a little funk on the nose for first 15 mins (1762 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 7/5/2014 & rated 92 points: really nice bottle, wine is dark purple (feeling modern/extracted), nose was as big as they get with super fruit and florals and even a little something else (bitter? savory? cedar?), palate was rich with fruit and cedar but it had good acid and a mouthfeel that wasn't overdone, certainly modern in style but not bothersome, very nice, probably not an ager, drink now (1769 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 5/26/2014 & rated 92 points: Decanted 3 hours. All Howell Mtn. Dark to the rim with black fruits, mineral undertones and licorice. Looong finish. Just a great bottle of wine. (2105 views)
Tasted by capacious on 3/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Huge wine, tons of juicy fruit, needs more time to evolve. Drank over two nights, better the second. If you like in your face napa night one is good. If you want wine and not juice give it time. (2130 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
