Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 153 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Winevestor on 4/29/2024 & rated 93 points: Good Howell Mountain cab. Well made, softer tannins than expected but this is just getting going in the drinking window. Plum, and a little bramble. (199 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 4/7/2024: Second bottle of 3 and similar notes to the prior bottle months ago, this being incrementally preferred (94-95+ if scoring vs. 94++), but that likely being more me than any bottle differences/maturity. Writing to reiterate that for my palate 1) no decant needed, although air didn’t hurt, either, with consistent notes over 3 nights, and 2) this is bang on in its drinking window, and while likely to hold a while, a while here is more like 5-7 years than the 15-20 others have suggested. Absolutely sang with a veal chop, and also a great drink on its own. More delineation would take it up a level, but nothing to feel bad about here, especially at its price point. This vintage really proving the screamer it was predicted to be, even if it took just a little longer than hoped. (878 views)
Tasted by mk42 on 3/22/2024 & rated 94 points: Blackberry, plum and black currant above a robust mineral floor. Beautiful garnet color. Mild nose of plum. Rich mouth, full bodied, but continues to come home to a soft tannin, clean rich finish. Oh, yeah, can cellar for lots more years. (890 views)
Tasted by Rrhodez on 3/11/2024 & rated 97 points: Drinking perfectly. (1248 views)
Tasted by drmarc61 on 2/7/2024 & rated 93 points: First of my six pack. upon opening, the aroma was blueberry compote, cassis and violet. Two hour decant in ETO. One of the heaviest of the Howell Mountain wines from this winery I've tasted. After two hours, the primary fruit was tied tightly with earth, wood and spice notes. Long taste held together with prominent tannin. Drank the first night over two hours and the wine mellowed and the nuances of the secondary and tertiary notes began to emerge.

I used the ETO to take the air out and stored at 55 degrees. Finished two nights later. This wine evolved into a complex, almost Bordeaux style wine. This wine should definitely jump up 2-4 points over the next decade. I will wait at least one year before cracking open another. This wine is an amazing wine at a great price. (1794 views)

Tasted by sstein19 on 12/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Dark garnet in color. Nose of plum, cherry, oak, and red licorice. Second nose is more of the same and vanilla. Tannins have held up well but round out the flavors through the palate and linger with a dry finish. Could age many more years. (1833 views)
Tasted by mbo1 on 11/25/2023 & rated 92 points: This is a big wine. Needs quite a bit more time to calm down... Initial nose and palate are strikingly similar to a syrah, but calms down after a few hours of time in decanter. Hold for a few more years. Has potential for 95+ (1919 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 8/25/2023 & rated 95 points: Napa 2023 - The Sequel; 8/23/2023-8/28/2023: Decanted for a short time (not sure how long). My favorite of the tasting, still a nice tannic backbone in place but nice balance developing between the fruit and earthy notes. Forest floor and black and red cherry complimenting each other, I think with more air, more complexity would have ensued. This has many years left but is certainly in the early part of a delicious drinking window. (3032 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 8/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Brought this to a Syrah vs. Cabernet dinner for my wine group at a NYC Steakhouse. All the wines were opened, but not decanted for at least 45 minutes before pouring. Somehow this seemed a little less complex than the 2013 Lewelling Wight we had alongside it. Big floral and fruity nose, full bodied, long finish, but a little one note-ish. (2182 views)
Tasted by littlefoot on 7/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Really like this despite Howell Mtn not being one of my favorites.
Lots of pencil lead, cedar, dyer nicely evolved secondaries. Dense and powerful but the tannins weigh nicely. (2341 views)
Tasted by travelme on 6/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Another exceptional bottle of O’Shaughnessy Howell Mountain Cab. Great bottle with that beautiful forest floor nose followed by a wine with significant complexity. I got some dark red and black fruits, crème de cassis, and hints of blackberry and vanilla on the palate. Still have five more. One of the great wine producers in the region. (2511 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 6/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Didn’t make mental notes on this one…just enjoyed with my son (also a dad) and wife on Father’s Day. (2292 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 5/3/2023 & rated 94 points: First of three from a large private party purchase about 2.5 years ago (hard to price individual bottles, but about $80@). On the nose and palate, black currants and cherries and lesser notes of mixed dark berries, red licorice, coffee grounds, dark chocolate, smoke, graphite and a bit of forest spice. Dark crimson, medium to full bodied, thick legs. Medium+ tannins, silky and well-integrated, medium acidity, very well integrated alcohol (15% abv). VG+ complexity and persistence, good+ intensity. My first so much as sip of any O’Shaughnessy product, and, unlike for many other tasters, it came out of the bottle singing, with its large elements beautifully balanced, mouth filling and well-integrated, a lovely and sophisticated pour. This version of this bottling hits a good spot on the Napa-BDX continuum, with sweet, opulent fruit held in a really nice spot by solid structure and just a touch of savoriness. Consistent notes over 3 nights of tasting, equally solid on its own and with a veal chop. Just a bit more concentration and delineation could have lifted this from excellence to closer to greatness. I was a bit surprised, relative to other ‘13s at fairly similar price points I’ve had in the past year-18 months (Chappellet, Nickel & Nickel CC, Riverain, Hartwell ER), at the level of maturity in this wine; it drinks like it’s already in the middle of its drinking window. I don’t think slippage is likely anytime soon but suspect it’s at or close to peak, and I’ll drink my remaining bottles in the next couple of years, maybe a bit less. Notable qpr at what I paid for it, if a bit less inspiring at the $130-150 I’m currently seeing on WS. Under any circumstances, really solid showing, and looking forward to my remaining bottles. 94++ (2296 views)
Tasted by pvewino on 4/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Now is the time to drink this one. Don't wait as my guess is that it will start to decline from here out. Best after about 30 - 60 minutes from opening. (2370 views)
Tasted by Red Sox Fan on 3/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Very nice after a 90 minute decant but after another 90 minutes it’s become a one dimensional zombie (2564 views)
Tasted by Wino from Michigan on 3/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Super good and drinking well right now (2402 views)
Tasted by WineGuyFL on 2/4/2023 & rated 94 points: Last bottle. This has been a terrific wine. It is still drinking well and should continue to hold up. It was opened in a restaurant for 30-45 minutes and was fine without a decant. (2870 views)
Tasted by quaffnov on 11/27/2022 & rated 92 points: After an hour of decant time this has a youthful presentation even after 9 years of cellar time. Dark fruit, borderline stringent tannins and a strong but balanced impression of oak stands out as well. This has plenty of room to develop more complexity and can lay down for several years to come. (2954 views)
Tasted by Mostholy on 11/27/2022 & rated 94 points: I’ve had this before and it’s gotten better with age. O’Shaughnessy always delivers and does it well. (2767 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 10/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Not decanted as I opened on short notice. Would be a benefit if only for sediment. Dark fruits, anise and coffee bean notes. Integrated, balanced and subtle while clearly at home in the Napa style. (2819 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 10/14/2022 & rated 95 points: Napa Cabs and Spanish Godellos (Bobby Van's on Park, NYC): The first red of a Napa night with my wine group and the unanimous favorite of the group. Long finish. This vintage is in a great place right now. (3078 views)
Tasted by JGinMO on 10/6/2022 & rated 93 points: Still incredibly young, but after 90 mins air started showing some nice nuance and secondary flavors. Hold. (2624 views)
Tasted by WineGuyFL on 8/13/2022 & rated 94 points: Exactly like two bottles consumed earlier this year. This wine is in a great drink window right now. Opened for 45 minutes in a restaurant with no decant. I doubt this one will get any better. (2814 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 6/5/2022 & rated 93 points: CA Cabernet vs. Bordeaux and Italy (Paul's House (in Town) - (May 15, 2022)): CA Cab vs. Bordeaux / Italy Tasting (all tasted blind)

Wine #8 of 10

Delicious bottle of wine. Didn't note color. Charred wood, cassis, ripe cherry and rosemary on nose. Palate had similar profile. Medium+ body, medium tannins and medium+ acidity - great structure here. My favorite of the CA wines this night. Guessed 2015+/- CA cab. 92-93 range. (3318 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
