Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dettwima on 12/9/2022 & rated 90 points: Lots of elegance demonstrated by this Chasse Spleen 2008, classic Bordeaux style, clever blend, lottle acidity bit lots of smooth to drink berries and some oak and tobacco I think. (1365 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 2/13/2022 & rated 91 points: Ruby colour with a nose of black fruit and pencil shaving and a lively palate of fresh blackberry and blackcurrant and a slightly savoury, dried herb finish. Medium body and lovely balance. (1903 views)
Tasted by GUBBIO on 5/20/2021 & rated 90 points: briefly decanted then put back into bottle
great cork
13 alc
enjoyed over a few days.

robe - still quite youthful, not showing any bricking , ruby rim
nose - the nose on this all of the way through was typical bordeaux with notes of tobacco, so nice oak but not oaky, high toned dark fruit along with some old leather. very textbook
palate - compared to comparable o8 brdx that i have had over the past 2 years, this is holding up. there is good length and some dusty tannins . it shows the brightness of the vintage but by no means " acidic", in fact the red and blue fruits still show through after 13 years.
i would drink this now and over the next 2 or so years. If this was next to the o9, i believe the mid palate would show thinner compared to an o9.
side note, over the summer i had the o8 Gloria and this is showing better than that bottle. even just down to density and mid palate.
good times
enjoy soon
great with steaks ! (2483 views)
Tasted by EMAZurich on 5/7/2021 & rated 88 points: Naja, wohl den Erwartungen entsprechend. Rubinrot, Ziegelreflexe, sehr breiter Wasserrand. Nase schwach aber eigentlich sehr OK. Waldbeeren, etwas Leder und Zedern. Am Gaumen eher brustkrank, sehr wässrig, rotbeerige Frucht. OK Bordeaux. (2464 views)
Tasted by rSyver on 2/7/2021 & rated 88 points: Quote OK to drink now, more to give if cellared more. A bit straight forward at the moment, but good balance, OK length. The typical Bordaux nose is there, but to site a Seinfeld episode - there is no "grace". I would expect it to be more elegant when adding a bit more complexity with more age - but don't expect it to be stunning.

Good for its level in my book. (2707 views)
Tasted by YoRi on 1/24/2021 & rated 89 points: Notes sommaires écrites après plusieurs jours
Nez chocolat noir, noix de grenoble
En bouche, tanins bien structurants et présents, bleuets et chocolat.
Porte bien son âge sauf au deuxième jour ou des notes de réduction prennent le dessus. (2116 views)
Tasted by Vandiner on 1/10/2021 & rated 90 points: Drinking nicely. Nothing particularly noteworthy but went great with a beautiful rack of lamb. (1648 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 1/9/2021 & rated 90 points: PnD let air for 2hrs.

Still young and grippy cassis plum herbs. Touch of cedar. Lingering grippy blackberry finish.

Thanks Vandiner. (1467 views)
Tasted by ChinaBounder on 8/31/2020 & rated 93 points: Really fine and proper BDX nose on opening, sweet blue fruit, some spice, blackcurrant/cassis. The nose curled out of the decanter and licked its tongue into the corners of the evening.

I left it to breathe a couple of hours, much looking forward to it. But the taste did not live up to the nose - mushy, unfocused, nothing there. Ah.

But... I am in a warm climate and the wine had become too warm. So back with a half bottle into my wine fridge for the next day.

And then it was just lovely - elegant, limpid, a taste I’d describe as somehow gravelly, but also slatey - and all the notes of a good classic Bdx, subtle, layered, good fruit but in no way a fruit bomb. I was very impressed.

As the wine warmed up, it lost this focus and became once again nothing special.

In short: this is a lovely wine, just lovely, but you have to keep it between 12 and 14 degrees - ah, in that range it just sings -

I don't quite agree with scoring wines, but this one is currently at 88.8, and that seems unmerited based on the bottle I just drank. So a 93, and one that it earns with ease.

Tasted by Wine_Bear on 5/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Wine was properly stored from purchase upon release until consumed.
Fruit jumps out of the glass. Raspberries, strawberries, frais des bois, kumquats, vanilla, fig. The scent of France. Later, apricot (?) joins in. (1628 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 7/14/2019 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit and beautiful lifted floral aromas with a lovely soft palate of blackberry and currant fruit, tannins are presented but melded into the wine. Still primary but drinking beautifully now. (2452 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 4/7/2019 & rated 90 points: Dark ruby with a nose of blackcurrant and with bbq meat aroma. The palate has blackcurrant fruit, good intensity, tannins are still present but don’t detract from the pleasure this wine gives. Long finish. (2682 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 2/16/2019 & rated 88 points: Quite a good, medium-bodied mouthful of typical CS blackcurrant, still a bit chunky, but no longer primary. This continues to evolve, now displaying a slightly green side to the fruit, which reminded me of a Chinon. It's at prime now, with no reason to suppose it will improve further. Not bad at all but I wouldn't rush out to buy any more. (2745 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 7/29/2018 & rated 90 points: Dark ruby. Black fruits, spice, cedar and lead nose it not hugely expressive. Sweet blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, soft on the palate with a nice balance on the finish. Delicious. (3416 views)
Tasted by winchester-xi on 5/19/2018: Nice wine. A bit leaner than some nearby vintages which makes it great for current drinking. Fresh, vibrant fruit, leaning towards the red end of the spectrum, with a bit of coffee and smoke in the background. Nothing tertiary. Would be happy if I had more. (3476 views)
Tasted by vide on 4/22/2018 & rated 86 points: If you possess any of this wine drink NOW! Deep plum edging to brick in colour; subdued nose of sweet fruit and cedar, but already inclining to acidity; slightly burnt taste, with some thin fruit, not inelegant but rather frail and hinting at a premature end. (2987 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 1/4/2018 & rated 88 points: Slightly more complex than the last one, with notes of red currant blending with the cranberry. Good CS typicity, with a nice dusty middle section but no reason to expect further improvement and the fruit is still fairly muted.
Tasted alongside Belgrave 08, this is less rich but with more fruit and complexity, so slightly better for me. Neither compare favourably with any number of Crus Bourgeois in 2010 which are also a bit cheaper. (3049 views)
Tasted by winchester-xi on 10/11/2017: The typical C-P smokiness and dark, plummy fruits are present, but dialed down a bit relative to some of the bigger vintages of the 00s. Although there's a little less length and intensity, this isn't an entirely bad thing, since it allows some red fruits to poke through. The wood treatment is also a bit more restrained. Pleasant, in a still somewhat burly way. (3205 views)
Tasted by Markus IWC on 9/7/2017 & rated 83 points: Mouldy notes, damp cellar, hay. (1019 views)
Tasted by Monkey47 on 7/24/2017 & rated 86 points: A small nose and taste of the Bordeaux' typical "barnyard" contrasts with the tannins which should have been integrated by now. Surprisingly, not much changes during the course of the evening. (3231 views)
Tasted by Patrick_from_champagne on 5/5/2017 & rated 89 points: Dark red color not showing trace of evolution.
Expressive nose with red fruits and roses.
Elegant palate with fruit notes (cherries...) and cedar.
Tannins not completely integrated.
Needs some time to open up,
Not a great complexity but such nice texture and elegance.
Give it another 3-5 years. (3184 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 2/5/2017 & rated 88 points: This is good, typical CS suavity and elegance with the subtle persistence it usually has. The fruit leans more towards cranberry than I would have expected and it is a little bland, but otherwise it's fine. Probably needs drinking sooner rather than later. (3623 views)
(3392 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/23/2016 & rated 87 points: Medium bodied, soft textured and serving up a lot of freshness in its melange of dark, red fruits, this can easily age for a few more years, allowing all its components to come further together as its a bit tight and simple at the moment. (4235 views)
Tasted by Christoffer S on 4/29/2016: Overraskende tilgjengelig fra flasken. (3603 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.
