Community Tasting Notes (average 94.2 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 90 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bubbachumps on 1/15/2024 & rated 96 points: Great combination of secondary characteristics along with strong fruit components. Cassis, minerals, dark berry and graphite on the nose. This had a very Bordeaux profile to it, with tannins completely integrated. Silky palate profile. Such a beautiful wine. Drink up if you have any. (493 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 5/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Opened and seemed almost corked. Funky nose mellowed out and the wine improved in the glass, but was still not up to par with other vintages. Less aromatic and dense as subsequent years, but still well layered and almost sweet raspberry taste. (724 views)
Tasted by mnweathersby on 7/23/2022 & rated 94 points: with Scot and Catherine at Lazy Betty. excellent, did require decanting and time. (1197 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 7/22/2022 & rated 96 points: Brick edges with bright ruby red color. Strawberry, sweet raspberry, oiled suede and gorgeous violets. Mouthwatering glycerin layers across the palate of this well structured wine. Many additional flavors evolve as it sits in the glass including tea leaves, currant, Asian spices and fields of blueberries. This wine is well exceeding expectations and my husband says quote “this wine is really freakin’ good!”

p.s. Tuscan chicken thighs with seared asparagus (1158 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 8/27/2021: Weekend in Westport; 8/25/2021-8/29/2021 (Westport, CT): This is one of those hedonistic wines that still somehow manages to keep some balance to it. Sad to see that we don't have any of these left since it certainly is still going strong and I would love to see it again in 10 or 20 years. It's not for the faint of heart, but still quite tasty. (2277 views)
Tasted by sfilene on 5/19/2021: Whoever thinks the powerhouse wines of Napa can’t age, should look no further than Hundred Acre. At twenty years old, this wine was just as a fresh and energetic as the day it was bottled. The only indication that you were drinking a twenty-year older wine, was that the fruit wasn’t quite as boisterous as it undoubtedly was back when bottled. Palate was robust with rich fruit and licorice and a touch of mint notes at the finish. This wine can age for decades upon decades more. (1862 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 5/30/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted 2.5 hours. Immensely powerful fruit still dominates the palate after all this time, along with noticeably hot alcohol, olive oil, and licorice. Parker thinks this will continue to evolve into the 2040s; Tanzer thinks it's best drunk in the next handful of years. Who is right? I understand those who say these cult wines are best drunk young but I'm still curious... (2661 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 7/16/2019: This guy was not so special when opened , day later showing much much better. Might be starting to ripen up a bit too much , high class juice. Drink it up !!!! (2482 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 12/17/2018 & rated 95 points: Great wine, but not great QPR (2888 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/17/2018 & rated 95 points: Almost too much of a good thing here, if Phil Spector made wine, using his "Wall of Sound' approach, this would be a wall of wine. Intensity, richness, length and a massive blast of wine coat your teeth, gums and palate. The wine is big, but the fruits are ripe, sweet, and there is freshness going on here. (3219 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 9/1/2018: Sweet red wine , very nice , less going on then previous bottles I have had over the last 8 years.Maybe just more simple , lost some structure. Enjoyed. (2317 views)
Tasted by Brett on 9/22/2017 & rated 97 points: Just an amazing bottle...only one left...so sad! (3428 views)
Tasted by Brett on 7/9/2017 & rated 97 points: Fantastic wine! Full of chocolate and plum tones! (2978 views)
Tasted by carman on 3/12/2017 & rated 98 points: Delicious (3001 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 2/18/2017: From magnum. One of the standouts in the lineup of wines at tonight's wine dinner. Definitely a richly styled napa cab with lots of sweet tannins and dark fruits, but the aging has really served it well. The fruit while forward is entirely in balance. Dark berries, dark chocolate and some earthy goodness, deliver a lot of complexity and enjoyment. (2827 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 2/18/2017: Tampa Spring Break (the second); 2/17/2017-2/19/2017 (Various spots (homes, Mis en Place, Capital Grille)): So if opening this wine, I highly recommend a longer decant than what we did (we poured from a magnum and gave it prob 2 hours and change - but man this was opening up 3 or 4 hours after the original pour). Just an awesome wine and one of my favorites of the night. Raspberry and brambles in the beginning. Then hints of herbal and fig and chocolate. By the end I was getting this lovely black cherry characteristic. Not all that hot for a Cali wine (13.9%). Very well balanced. Could have gone longer. Just beautiful. (3657 views)
Tasted by andy C on 12/15/2016 & rated 92 points: strong funk on the notes. decanted for 90 minutes and began to open up. nice earthy wine was missing some of its fruit. (1924 views)
Tasted by acyso on 9/10/2016 & rated 90 points: Flickinger Warehouse Tasting (Chicago, IL): Certainly another example of overwrought Napa wine, but this one seems to work out a lot better than its peers. Perhaps it's because of the vintage and the fruit hasn't fully receded yet? This is quite restrained, and the oak usage here very judicious and matches the fruit profile very, very well. It never pokes out at all. There's no disputing that this is a very polished wine, and it will never have all those dirty, dusty qualities that the best Bordelais wines will, but even to me, this is a very well-made example.  Tasted by dharrison93 on 11/17/2015 & rated 96 points: Serious juice. Perfectly integrated seamless nose of blackberry, cherry and spice. The tannin is in the back seat now but there's plenty of structure for another decade or two of pleasure.

If a date, this was a 35 year old PhD in modern urban philosophy who strongly believes a man's place is in the bedroom. (3149 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/12/2015: Opened and decanted for about 30 minutes before serving. This wine was in a wonderful place. Paired with steak and it was a match made in heaven. This wine had great depth, strong fruit, nice spice characteristics. It's a fantastic wine. (2776 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 5/10/2015: very nice , had a smokey thing going on that I didn't remember from any other bottles i have had.......well made wine (3284 views)
Tasted by awineo on 2/6/2015 & rated 96 points: Outstanding wine. Solid integrated fruit and tannins. (3445 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 1/24/2015 & rated 96 points: What an unbelievable wine. And drinking very well right now. Nuanced with so many changes that take place on your palate as you enjoy the long finish. Very lucky that Tom chose to share this night. (3463 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/5/2014: Zachy's Wine Auction - Winter 2014 (Smith & Wollensky (48th & 3rd Ave)): This wine leaped out of the gate. We pnp'ed and it was drinking fantastically almost immediately. Seems to be in the ideal drinking window. The fruit was more prevalent at the start, but it was constantly evolving and the only thing the first taste and finish had in common was they were both delicious. Spectacular wine. (3129 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 10/24/2014: Drank right after an '86 Bordeaux. It was a great wine - really lovely fruit and spice flavors. Needed more time to open up. We popped the cork a few hours before pouring, but prob should have decanted as it took awhile to really show well. The drinking window in CT (drink by 2014) is much too narrow. Suspect this can go for a few more years although not sure it will improve much. (2266 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
