Introduction

It is always a treat to get together for holidays and wine. This was no exception. My dad kind of went nuts with the meat this year (salmon, ham, and leg of lamb) but it did make for more pairings!

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2010 St. Innocent Pinot Blanc Freedom Hill Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Very pale greenish color. PNP, drank 1+ glasses over an hour. This bottle lacked some of the more tropical notes of the previous one, lots of earth, minerals, stone fruit and citrus on the nose. The palate is light bodied, tart, apple and pear and citrus, prominent acidity, mineral driven finish. Though this have decent fruit it is full of minerals and acidity. 89+ to 90pts.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Zenith Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Dark red color. PNP. Followed several glasses over 48 hours. This was very good on day 1, but was significantly better on day 2 and day 3. The nose has lots of damp earth, a touch of funk, spice, and cherry, and mushroom. It starts off with this dark and brooding character but on day develops this floral violet quality along with distinct raspberry and strawberry notes with some vanilla bean. All of this translates very well on the deep and sultry palate showing lovely red fruits of sour cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, some brown spices, earth, and long finish. Best bottle to date, 92+ to 93pts.

  • 2003 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel 93 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Dark purple color. Decanted for 30 minutes, drank 2 glasses and followed for an hour plus. Somewhat tight on opening and definitely benefited from the decant. Nose is big with scorched earth, tar, blackberry, blueberry, plum, spice. The palate is rich, layered, and concentrated, lovely glycerin, black and blue fruits consistent with the nose, very well integrated and balanced, really nice amount of pepper and spice blending with the fruit. Long finish. I agree with vanpe003 that this could go awhile. I also agree it is at peak and given recent experiences with older Washington wines, I don't see sitting on this for long.

  • 2000 Château Daugay 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Very dark red/purple color. No bricking. Decanted for 3 hours, drank 2+ glasses over 2 hours. This really went well with roasted leg of lamb. The nose shows dank earth, cherry, cassis, plum, cedar, graphite, sweet tobacco. The palate has medium full to full body, sour cherry, cassis, dust, gravelly minerals, cedar, tobacco, medium-plus finish. Really hitting its stride.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 2006 King Estate Pinot Gris Vin Glacé 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Deep amber color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. I love this nose, full of apricot, orange blossum, honey, floral, peach, creme brule. The palate is strikingly full, viscous, ripe apricots, tangerine, honey, vanilla, spices, long finish. I continue to be impressed by the balance of this wine. Definitely not fading yet.
