Flight 1 - Meursault v Montrachet (2 Notes)

Big names in their commune, this really just shows the terroir of the grapes being sourced. Perfectly paired with salted egg yolk squid and the fried frog legs with crispy ginger.

  • 1995 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Suprising acidity and freshness pumping liveliness to caramely slightly reductive notes. A bit muted on the aromatics dept but palate is deeply flavoured with good rich , slightly buttery bright yellow fruits. Nice lemons with just a touch of custard and some minerality. Excelllent wine till finish. Satisfying but just a lil shy on the nose.

  • 2002 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc 83 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Excellent vintage and shows on a simple bourgogne. This in a blind would be more like a good village at least. Lifted aromatically explosive nose of burg ass, gun flint and lots of schist. Quite rich but powdery mouthfeel with simple but still deep flavours of citrus and white stonefruits. Oak still not properly integrated. Might need more time but probably just drink it.

Flight 2 - Burgundish Rioja (1 Note)

A class in its own right. This did well with the chinese style filet steak.

  • 1993 Siglo Rioja Gran Reserva 86 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

What a nose from a Rioja! This is every bit as burg as I like with burgundian flowers done in a classy and elegant manner. Welcoming on smell and very attractive. Silky smooth heaven of al dente stewed cherry ripe elegant fruits. Suprisingly and pleasingly youthful. Delicious wine but does wane away nearing the end. While it lasts though, this is still pretty robust a wine but in a very well balanced style. Any burgundy fan would love it.

Flight 3 - Two Burgs (2 Notes)

One too young at 1o years old, the other at the start of its window. Deliciously paired with claypot lap mei rice.

  • 1996 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey 84 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Musky rotten eggs, burg ass with some soapiness. Very pungently aromatic. Fresh stewed fruits with strong showing of red cherries, sweet ripe black berries but with some age. Still mostly primary , fresh and reasonably youthful . Could need another 5 years.

  • 2000 Domaine Perrot-Minot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru La Richemone Vieilles Vignes 83 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Placed against a 96 corton and a 93 Rioja, this really seemed an adolescent with no inkling of the world it is in. Still harsh, brambly and very much spicy with concentrated black fruit extract. Might need more time but at the moment very awkwardly too structured for a burg. A brash young man still finding his foothold in the world.
