Introduction

Last minute invite, having not seen anyone since Christmas thought it was time to meet up with some friends.

Flight 1 - Soup (1 Note)

Having shared a series of e-mail about the an 'en-primeur' offer for the 2003 and having recently tried the fantastic 2003 thought it was good time to bring out an older Leeuwin. Served with roast pumpkin soup.

  • 1999 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 93 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Surprised it still had obvious oak - reminded me of the 2001. However, mellowed out but showed less of the big fruity tropical note which Leeuwin can have and more of the minerally steel which makes it such a great wine.

Flight 2 - Main course (2 Notes)

7 hour slow roast lamb shanks, marninated in garlic, olive oil, rosemary and lime. Served with aspargaus and new potatos. Danny has been 'posting' his older Aussie wine back from Australia so brought around the '94 (we have a '94, '95 and '96 night lined up next month) and a new wine from Boutique Wines.

  • 1994 Henschke Shiraz Mount Edelstone 94 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

First impressions where of a lovely balanced wine, some fruit still but balanced by acidity, tannins and age - all perfectly balanced.

  • 2002 Willow Bridge Estate Shiraz Black Dog 79 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Geographe

mmmm. Big but unbalanced and didn't come round all evening. Disjointed with a lot of what seems like pure, primary acidity - sits in the stomach and makes you reach for the rennie. Got worse as the evening went on and the bottle ended up in the sink.
