SLDS July 2017 (Cirrus): Blind. Pineapple, peach, orange, white florals and graphite. Plenty of weight on the palate, with deep tropical fruit and a good line of acidity. Complex, with real interest and very good structure. The best bottle of this wine that I've had since release.

Beautiful wine. Opened with stone fruits and minerals. Seemed like a slightly ripe and fully blossomed Puligny and Maursault mix. Palate was creamy and complex with stone fruits, minerals and white flowers.Very fresh and slightly salty. Long finish and the stoniness lingered for pretty long after that. Superb wine from Australia. After tasting one this old, it seems a waste to drink it young like most do. Note to self: Keep all Art Series Chards for a at least 10 years.

A rather remarkable drinking experience here, as my wife had opened a bottle for a friend's visit, and left half of the unfinished open bottle overnight in the living room. So this open white bottle spent some 10 hours at 25C before I vacuumed the wine in the morning, and put in the fridge with the intention of perhaps saving it for cooking. Tried a glass the following evening and could not believe that there was no oxidization whatsoever and the wine tasted just like I remembered the first bottle back in 2013. Mature, golden yellow color, nice, fine nose with straw and white fruit, a bit too buttery on the palate for my liking, with the effect of masking perhaps some more subtle flavors, closing however with a nice medium plus finish. Still an impressive mature Chardonnay with some stamina left...

This was the best bottle of 10yr plus Leeuwin that I have drunk for sometime. There is often considerable bottle variation and early oxidisation but get a good bottle espec from a good year like 1999 and it's sublime. Nice fruit, integrated with quality oak treatment but with minerality and a hint of Indian spice. Real quality.

Golden yellow. An initial smell and taste of hay / straw and flowers. Then an exceptionally rich buttery and oily palate. Very slight bitterness. While the wine does not taste fresh, there is enough acidity not to make the wine taste overly flat. Nice medium / medium + finish.
A bit too rich style for my taste but I appreciate the quality of this Chardonnay which is undeniable.
PS: Unlike some of the recent other tasters, no oxidation notes whatsoever. Also did not find that the rather high alcohol shows on nose or palate (14.5%)

This bottle was affected by some distinct oxidation -- not dominant but enough to distort the experience. Blossomed somewhat with food, especially the cured salmon salad, revealing a caramel nose, fine underlying fruit and a tart finish.

Australian Wines of Repute (Sydney, Australia): Still plenty of oak evident here along with ginger and honey with a smoky note that I found appealing. Bold and round palate that perhaps just had a tinge of oxidisation to it. The wine perked up with some food and this really assisted with the balance. Very good, but drink now if this is representative.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay (AuZone, Stockholm): Bright yellow, slightly paler than 2001 and 2000. Nose with ripe citrus, some honey, flowers, mineral, some oak and some smoky notes, discrete development. The nose is younger than that of the 2000 and 2001. The palate shows powerful citrus notes, honey, very light bitterness, good acidity and a long aftertaste with mineral and mint. Good development, shows freshness, and only very little bitterness.

still really nice after all these years , a lot of alcohol on the nose , some scotch tape as well , while not fading this has become a little harder to drink over the years as the alcohol has become very prevalent , not sure why that is , not much in the way of secondary tastes or colors .........

As usual a very good Leeuwin Estate Chard. Golden color. Decant. Lots of floral and citrus. Grapefruit. Oily and buttery. Still lots of acid. Nice long finish. Maybe a year or two left to drink. Two left. If you have them enjoy soon.

Rich golden hue. Fully developed bouquet with stark eucalyptus upon opening. With a bit of air it blew off to reveal sunflower oil and dried chamomile florals, poached pear, coconut spiced rum, creamed corn behind hints of caramel and butterscotch. Long honeyed finish. initial nose, fat and buttery. Left in the glass for a while opened with a floral scent. Lasting on the palate for 15 seconds and quite enjoyable. Should drink unlike the '98 I opened earlier that has at least another 10 years this wine needs to be drunk now.

Deep yellow colour with intense marmalade nose. Needs time to settle and intergrate in the glass- intially alot of alchohol happening. The wine then shows some mineral and complexity not just fruit, and oak. Drinking superbly now.

Rich, minerally, citrus, with a tinge of butter. This wine is definitely hitting its peak now, as the acidity is starting to wear out. The alcohol is getting a little strong due to its age and some heat was evident; however, after a few minutes the heat blows off and a unique minerality takes its place. I was highly impressed with this and am glad that I have one more bottle left. It's ready now so I'll have to drink it soon.

The nose doesn't give this wine justice, as the palate iis really rocking. The texture is very oily and viscous, balanced by strong acid. Coconut, peach, and nutmeg dominate the palate. Very well balanced and could continue to age for another few years, though it is probably at its peak.

I would highly recommend decanting for at least 30 minutes. Very closed and somewhat bitter for first glass. THEN....opened to beautiful buttery grapefruit/citrus flavors followed by an extremely complex and long oily finish. Has at least 4-5 years of prime drinking left.

Nose of mandarin orange. Smoky vanillla and coconut oak. Ripe pineapple. The oak is slightly more prominent than the fruit which makes the wine slightly unbalanced. It seems best to drink this sooner rather than later as the fruit seems to be fading. Impressively long finish. Still manages to be a great Chardonnay.

The bottle had a low fill and was oxidized. UNDER the sherry/oxidized characteristics, there was the wonderful complex lemon drop flavors that are often associated with this wine. Tasted at Vintage 64 Club 2007 AGM. Straw to gold in colour, this wine was slow to reveal itself. First hints on the nose were some yeasty characters followed eventually by hints lime after some 5 to 10 minutes in the glass. When it opened this wine revealed itself to still be relatively youthful and complex, but with probably less acid than was evident in the ’95. A pleasant wine that rewarded patience on the night, in four years time this wine is unlikely to present as well at the ’95 did this evening.

TTG#10: Summer Wines? (Tokyo American Club): Nice rich yellow color and a rich nose to match. Obvious oak that is creamy rather than toasty and that does not get in the way of the tropical fruit – linchee and a bit of pineapple – or the ripe appley pear. On the palate, a rich and similarly creamy feel, with some vanilla, but more fruit. Through it all, though, was just enough mineral and just enough cut that I was reminded why this is one of my favorite new world chardonnays. Not something to drink everyday, but an absolute crowd pleaser that I can thoroughly enjoy.

Toast, strong pear, peach, grapefruit and nutty, creamy oak that is well blended into the rest of the nose. A very classy palate that is just slightly let down with just a touch too much oak at this stage and just a bit of alcoholic heat on the back palate that I fear may not subside with time.

This was opened the previous day that I drank it. The way this 6 year old chard, opened a day, held up, was pretty amazing. It's honeyed, oaked, with a spicy bite to it. But there's also a real minerality to this wine. This tasted pretty young. It's rich, fruity, yet elegant. A real experience. I'd probably bump this wine up to a 95 with optimum tasting conditions.

Century Wine Club - Chardonnay Spectacular (Roberts Restaurant, Pokolbin): Probably the Chardonnay of the night for me - no surprise there. Lots of spice and flavour on the palette. Last minute dinner with Danny and Jules (Our place, Hong Kong): Surprised it still had obvious oak - reminded me of the 2001. However, mellowed out but showed less of the big fruity tropical note which Leeuwin can have and more of the minerally steel which makes it such a great wine.

Bright, pale gold. Medium intense, fairly subtle aromas of pears and well integrated creamy oak, hints of tropical fruit. Dry, full bodied with balancing crisp acidity. Medium + intense flavours of pears, apple and hints of tropical fruit on mid-palate with creamy oak and hints of spice on a very long finish with very nice opposing acidity. Very good chardonnay, well balanced with attractive flavours. Quite Burgundian in style, but lacking the complexity and elegance of the better wines from the Cote D'Or. Drinking well enough now this has both good structure and fruit and should improve for several years to come.

Glasgow Offline (Chardon d'Or): Glorious tropical fruit, buttery nose with some lychee fruit. Rich and powerful, this is a very big mouthful. But it lacks elegance. Huge, with fabulous length. A very nice wine, but it’s a bit brutish for me and I can’t quite see what its use is.

Served with warm Lobster Salad. A big, lush, Burgundian style of Chardonnay. A slight note of oak that has diminished over the last couple of years. Think Grand Cru on this one.

1982 Bordeaux @ Wilf's (NYC): Served blind by David Wainwright. The group started off thinking California Chardonnay. Then someone thought maybe a white Rhone. Rhone was shot down then after talking about how sweet and forward the fruit was. The nose was soaring with fruit. We went back to California Chardonnay and you could make out some of the creamy oak flavors on the nose. David revealed the elegant Australian Leeuwin and people were in shock. It was an amazingly great bottle of Chardonnay and everyone loved it. Well worth keeping an eye out for a perfect wine to serve blind in a tasting. Great job David - a classy wine.

Tasted blind: Quite pale with almost a greeny tinge. Very aromatic with an obvious oak edge, quite classy and buttery. Good length with fine acidity and balance. Was confused for a burgundy, and when revealed as a Leeuwin described by others as the "best wine ever had from Leeuwin".

The 1999 continues the consistency of this wine as what I consider to be not only Australia's best wine but the best new world Chardonnay. At $60 a bottle there is no rival to this lemon pineapple fruit bomb style of wine which reveals massive fruit in the mouth with perfect integration of oak. This is a must buy.

On the palate, a rich and similarly creamy feel, with some vanilla, but more fruit. Through it all, though, was just enough mineral and just enough cut that I was reminded why this is one of my favorite new world chardonnays. Not something to drink everyday, but an absolute crowd pleaser that I can thoroughly enjoy.

very tastey , seemed metalic in the 1st 5 mins but opened up nice. some fruit , not a ton though . very well balanced. given that this wine is supposed to have 10 - 20 years in a bottle i look forward to the rest of the case.had a sweetness to it as well.

Well integrated oak, perhaps abit harsh in the glass to begin with - needed a minute or two to settle. Lots of intensity with tonnes of life left yet.

Very pale with an unusual greenish tinge. Good buttery nose, but a bit reticent and needs coaxing out. Superb classic chardonnay. Exceptional balance. Very good length. Very Good Indeed/Excellent.
