The Blind Drunks monthly tasting

As is our custom, the wines for the tasting are served double blind to the group in brown paper bags. Each flight is tasted, discussed and unveiled before moving on to the next flight. Wines are listed in the order they appeared in the flight. Always humbling!

• 2000 Jean-Jacques Vincent Pouilly-Fuissé Château de Fuissé

  France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé

  Pale color with notes of stone fruit and apple. Nice acidity, with apple and orchard fruit tones on the palate.

  Pale color with notes of cotton, stone and white fruit. Nice acidity, with white fruit and a waxy texture. A domestic Rhone blend?

• 2006 McCrea Roussanne Ciel du Cheval Vineyard

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

  Aromas of white fruit and apple. Full-bodied, with an oily, viscous mouthfeel. Lots of fruit on the palate, with a long finish. Very nice. Guess Rhone.

• 2005 Bott-Geyl Riesling Les Elements

  France, Alsace

  Pale color. Initial aromas of crab apple and white flowers turn to flint and mineral as teh wine warms in the glass. Good acidity, focused. Flavors of sour apple, flint and mineral.

• 2008 Stefania Chardonnay Chaine d' Or Vineyard

  USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

  Pale yellow color. Notes of vanilla, butter and apple. Good mouthfeel, with flavors of smoky apple and flowers, with a touch of mineral on the finish. Really nice.

  France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Vin de Pays des Pyrénees-Orientales

  Notes of red cherry, currants and raspberry liqueur. The palate follows the nose, with slightly chewy tannins. No guess.

• 2001 Bodegas Protos Ribera del Duero Reserva

  Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

  Initially quite reticent this finally opened a bit in the glass. Notes of brambly, slightly pruny dark fruit with a subtle meaty tone. Flavors of red and dark fruit, with a nice spicy finish. Guessed 2003 Tempranillo.

• 1990 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Coronas Reserva Mas La Plana 92 Points

  Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

  Dark crimson color. Notes of olive, meat, peppery/briary red fruit. A bit later it developed a brackish saline note, also bouillon and vegetal (in a good way) qualities. Well-balanced, with very soft tannins and flavors of red fruit and warm spices. Medium length finish. No guess, but I like this.

• 2007 Stefania Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains

  Notes of cherry, white pepper and spice, maybe a touch hot at first...then it unfurls with loads of fruit. Flavors of cherry and red fruit, accented by cinnamon and baking spices. Took a while to open in the glass, but once it did, what a great little Pinot.

  Dark color. A bit pruny, with dark fruit and beef bouillon notes. Flavors of dark fruit and raspberry liqueur with an underlying saline quality. I thought this was some obscure varietal, perhaps southern Italian.

  Dark color. Aromas of beef bouillon, prunes, tobacco and dark fruit. A bit brighter on the palate, with raspberry and red currant tones. No guess.
