Introduction

Met with a couple people at Urbana for a Spottswoode tasting. All Spottswoode bottles were sourced from Winebid and had received about 90 minutes of slow-ox before consumption.

Flight 1 - Welcome Whites (4 Notes)

  • NV Laurent-Perrier Champagne Brut L.P. 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Sour apple on the nose with baked bread and citrus. Refreshing wine with great acidity and depth. Very nice.

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Another great showing for the 2002 DP. Very light, subtle bubbles combine with deep minerality and citrus notes in building this wines complex and deep structure. This needs a lot of time either in a cellar or decanting to realize its full potential at the moment, but there wasn't any doubt around the table that we were tasting the makings of a truly memorable bottle of Dom.

  • 2007 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tones of almond paste, tropical fruits, and a slight nuttiness come across on this dense wine. The palate is rich, complex and balanced. After an hour or so, there was a waxiness that began to develop that was elegant and firm. Candied pears, honeycomb, meyer lemons and chalk flavors meld together creating a deep, complex chardonnay. Overall, this is an outstanding wine that teeters on the edge of elegance and extravagance.

  • 2007 Etienne Sauzet Chassagne-Montrachet 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

Very fresh nose of citrus, wet slate, and lemons. Great minerality on the palate with lots of acidity and fresh citrus flavors. Felt that this really developed well in the glass over the course of the night. Worth letting this wine age for a couple of years.

Flight 2 - Spottswoode Vertical (5 Notes)

  • 1991 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Showed an elegant nose of coffee, hints of veggies, candied cherries and bramble. Some thought this was slightly cooked, but it was an enjoyable wine that still had nice structure.

  • 1992 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

I really liked this wine. Nose had subtle chocolate, coffee grinds, black fruit, and cranberries. Its elegant palate had dark cherries, cranberries, and a subtle earthiness. For me, its distinct spiciness made it stand out from the other Spottswoode's. Still has a lot of structure left too.

  • 1993 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Nose had somoe sweet cherry flavors, dried flowers and some warm spices. The palate featured brambles, mushroom notes and some leather. Red fruit was weaved through the earthy notes and there was nice structure and acidity on the finish. Enjoyable wine.

  • 1994 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Mature nose of cassis, red berries, some spice and cedar. The body of the wine was noticeably thin, with some fall leaves, coffee and red fruit. I thought this was a bit disappointing in comparison to the 1993. Came across a touch tired.

  • 1997 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Brooding nose of spruce, some forest floor, and red fruit. A very dark wine that probably could use some more time to mature. Elegant red fruit, florals, tobacco notes, and sous bois were the main flavor components. Lots of structure here - I think this will take a couple more years to soften up some of the edges in the wine. Very nice.
